The ART team has an opening for a Materials R&D Engineer, in our the High Temperature Composites (HTC) discipline, to work in the design, development and testing of high temperature composites, including carbon-carbon composites (C-C), Silicon Carbon (SiC- SiC) and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs).

The engineer would bring expertise in is role design, s materials and process technology engineering solutions. Additionally would lead , develops processes and analytical procedure developments, conducts tests on raw materials, and would work working closely with external suppliers to ensure part, process, performance feasibility. The role will also interface with production failure analysis issue may also support production, including conducting root cause investigations performing failure analysis and problem solving.

What You Will Do::

  • Conceptualize, manage, and perform experimental, and analytical R&D in support of high temperature friction and structural materials for aerospace applications.

  • Lead hands on execution of Chemical Vapor Infiltration, Polymer Infiltration and Pyrolysis, and Melt Infiltration CMC process experiments for the HTC Laboratory

  • Lead hands on execution of Resin and melt infiltration experiments for the HTC lab

  • Drive, diagnose, maintain, existing lab equipment for high temperature composite materials and build CAPEX business justifications for improving deposition systems and capabilities.

  • Structured Problem solving approach preferably with Lean Six Sigma Statistical experience, to project planning, task management, lab experimentation, to build technology and data sets that can be shared with internal customers, giving them confidence that we took a structured and planned approach to understanding the key process factors.

  • Plan and execute on time, on spec. on budget projects milestones, communicate progress with leadership within ART and with the key stakeholders.

  • Must be willing and able to travel 10% of the time

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience

  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract

  • 2+ years of Hands-on experience with some or all or all Chemical Vapor Infiltration, Polymer Infiltration and Pyrolysis, and Melt Infiltration CMC processes and one or more of the following areas of technical expertise: Physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, preferably in aerospace applications.

  • 3+ years experience with material analysis techniques using SEM, optical microscopy, thermal and chemical spectral analysis

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • PhD or advanced degree

  • Demonstrate knowledge of medium to high vacuum systems and vacuum furnaces.

  • Experience with processing of materials (carbon and ceramics) and how it affects friction behavior

  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
