Hours: 7:30AM - 2:45PM

    General Duties:

  • Assists with classroom activities as directed by the teacher.

  • Works with individual children as directed by a teacher.

  • Assists children with arrival and departure involving coats, boots, and lunches.

  • Helps keep supplies and materials in order.

  • Helps prepare materials for their use.

  • Cleans up and puts away materials after use.

  • Changes children's clothing and cleanses children, if necessary.

  • Assists the teacher in implementing the classroom and/or individual student's behavior management program.

  • Accompanies a child when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the child must go to another part of the building.

  • Assists in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.

  • Assists and supervises games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.

  • Assists the teacher in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to: feeding, toileting, and other activities of daily living(e.g. grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).

  • Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities.

  • Teacher Aides working with non-ambulatory students are expected to lift 40- pound loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices.

  • SPECIAL NOTE: The ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teacher aides who work with non-ambulatory students. Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability. Teacher aides should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices.

  • Be an active part of the classroom education team, as demonstrated by following teacher directions, being cooperative, showing support for other team members and focusing on student needs and outcomes.

  • Discuss parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.

  • Maintains confidentiality of student information.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:

A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; or;

B) Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved, not necessarily in an aide role; or;

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience working in Special Education preferred
