The Role

Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. This position is located in in Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom

This position is at the request of Naval Reactors and the UK Ministry of Defense for an assignment at BAE Systems (BAES) in Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom . The initial contract period will be two years, with the possibility of annual renewals thereafter.

This embedment position is to provide support to the engineers designing, developing and qualifying SSNA Main DC and Battery DC systems and components. This embed will facilitate effective integration of US DC electric plant technology through understanding and implementation of US electric plant system design and program principles into the SSNA electric plant design, build, and test/commissioning effort. This will be accomplished through integration into BAE, CTF, and other work sites, aiding in the development of the following:

Electric Plant Design Deliverables

Build and Test Procedures

Supporting integration of US provided electrical components

Defect resolution of US components

Reviewing Test Sheets

Reviewing Test Procedures and data

Selected candidate will provide knowledge of design, installation, testing, and troubleshooting of US electrical systems and components through either direct knowledge or through utilization of the reach back process to US-based Subject Matter Experts and ensure correct interpretation, assimilation, and characterization of US electric plant design philosophy into the maturing SSNA electric plant design.

Selected candidate will provide unique knowledge of the following VIRGINIA DC Electric Plant System to inform the SSNA design:

  1. Fundamentals and details of the VIRGINIA electric plant design

  2. Details regarding the analysis, test, and commissioning of the VIRGINIA electric plant

  3. Specifics about operation of the VIRGINIA electric plant

  4. VIRGINIA electric plant safety case, casualties, and casualty operation

  5. Fault protection and incorporation

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
