Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Computational Scientist to work in our Computational Mechanics and Materials department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

Our Computational Scientist will be a strong asset to our software development team and working both in isolation and as a member of the team. You must take direction from other team members and peers and provide input in a constructive manner to others while maintaining a positive and professional relationship with all. You will report to the Department Manager.

Responsibilities Include:

  • May lead projects on computational methods development for solid mechanics, structural dynamics, thermal-mechanical contact, and fracture. Specifically, assist with the development and testing of these algorithms and their application to support nuclear fuel analysts.
  • Must have experience with partial differential equation (PDE) constrained optimization algorithms and their application to thermal-mechanical inversion problems. Must be familiar with gradient-based optimization algorithms and the use of automatic differentiation and adjoints to compute gradients.
  • Must have experience developing reduced order and surrogate models of multiphysics systems using proper orthogonal decomposition, discrete element interpolation method, gaussian processes, and physics informed neural networks.
  • Must have experience working on a software development team developing and testing software. Must be familiar with C/C , Python, Cubit, and FEA software.
  • Provide recommendations to INL management to ensure program goals and milestones are clearly defined and achieved. Foster collaborative relationships both inside the INL and external entities (university faculty, industry vendors, other national laboratories, and foreign national researchers).
  • Prepare internal and external technical reports; publish work in peer-reviewed journals, topical meetings, conference summaries, and conference proceedings. Participate in professional society activities.
  • Initiate research efforts by authoring proposals, lead proposal teams, and conducting advanced research and development investigations.

*Minimum Requirements: * * Bachelor of Science degree in nuclear science, materials science, computational engineering, computational applied mechanics, computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, or another similar degree and 2 years of relevant experience. * Proficiency in C , Python, and/or Fortran object-oriented programming languages, finite-element methods, advanced numerical methods for nonlinear analysis, and the development of complex engineering analysis software. * This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship. * *Job Information: *

  • The pay range for this position is $75,804min - $155,496max. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
