The Senior Advisor for Journalistic Standards and Public Trust plays a key role in ensuring the journalism produced by CBC News adheres to the highest standards and principles outlined in CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Journalistic Standards and Public Trust, the Senior Advisor is an essential point of contact within the JSP office for newsroom leaders who require guidance on matters of ethics and principles in our daily newsgathering, programming and investigative journalism. This position has a specific emphasis on Public Trust.
The Senior Advisor also plays a critical role in the office’s relationship with the CBC Ombudsman and prepares and organizes responses to public complaints, working with the appropriate leaders from across the division.
In the long term, the Senior Advisor contributes to the ongoing conversation around the strategy and evolution of CBC’s journalistic standards by channeling and compiling feedback from internal and external stakeholders. They contribute to the management of the journalism standards training file. Additionally, this role drafts internal and external communication about how CBC English Services applies its journalistic standards.
Main responsibilities and impact
Be one of the main guardians of CBC’s journalistic principles, advise journalists and Managing Editors, Directors, and Senior Directors on JSP standards and strategy and decisions as they go about their work.
The Senior Advisor has the expertise and experience to advise and ensure proper standards are applied for the most delicate and sensitive news initiatives, making daily editorial decisions around the interpretation of standards and escalations to the Senior Director of JSP
Act as the Senior Director of JSP’s deputy and delegate
Research debatable or controversial journalistic matters and make recommendations to the Senior Director of JSP and Editor-in-Chief on the most sensible guidelines for CBC News. This includes internal consultation as well as external research, such as reviewing pertinent scholarship, the positions of other news organizations, etc.
Liaise with other CBC leaders or staff with special knowledge in other departments like Law and Sports when drafting various editorial guidelines
Help manage the JSP Office’s relationship with the CBC Ombudsman. The JSP Office is the intermediary between the Ombudsman and the leaders of CBC News
As part of the JSP Office team, address, prioritize and respond to issues or complaints regarding coverage coming from the Ombudsman’s office or directly from the audience.
Participate in conducting reviews about journalism concerns and monitor and assess the balance and fairness in news and current affairs coverage
Lead, guide and engage in conversations across communities and audiences regarding perceptions of CBC journalism and work with senior leadership to educate external and internal stakeholders about journalism issues
Advise and consult on best practices around building and maintaining public trust in CBC journalism
Act as a trainer and educator when appropriate
Participate in drafting material for public consumption for the JSP office
Lead, guide and engage in conversations across communities and audiences regarding perceptions of CBC journalism and work with senior leadership to educate external and internal stakeholders about journalism issues
This role can be based in any location in Canada.
Travel requirements: limited but as needed to support CBC News.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
Degree in Journalism or equivalent
3+ years of success as an editorial leader and advisor
Significant work experience in the areas of journalism
A proven track record of success in managing complex relationships with external and internal stakeholders
Deep cultural awareness, sensitivity and appreciation of diversity of perspectives, opinion and experience
Proven track record of continually upgrading one’s knowledge and skills to keep current
Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects effectively
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong leadership skills, especially in the disciplines of communication, problem-solving, and decision making
Proven ability to get things done in a dynamic, multifaceted, and complex environment
Innovation oriented
