Department Summary:
MITRE’s Software Engineering Innovation Center is one of the government’s largest R&D resources dedicated entirely to software engineering; delivering a comprehensive spectrum of capabilities, spanning the full development lifecycle from prototyping (concept and user-centered design), through software architecture & modeling, agile development, testing and deployment, to software assessments (verification & validation).

Job Summary:
This is an opportunity for an experienced Lead or Principal Software Engineer to join our team, who not only excels in software development but also possesses business development, innovation, and leadership skills. In this position , you will play a critical role in driving technical innovation, leading cross-functional teams, and collaborating with stakeholders to identify and pursue new opportunities for impact. This position also provides challenging opportunities to apply and expand one’s systems engineering, systems architecture, modeling , and trade space analysis skills.
Responsibilities:
Oversee the d esign, develop ment , and deploy ment of healthy software solutions that address complex problems in areas such as national security, healthcare, and sustainability
Provide strategic level advice and actionable recommendations in support of the sponsor’s mission; develop and champion mid- and long-term strategies for the sponsor.
Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance and oversight
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including domain experts, business development, and IR&D to identify and pursue new opportunities
Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including partners, sponsor s, academic, and commercial organizations
Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies, applying this knowledge to drive innovation and growth
Contribute to the development of business cases, proposals, and pitches to secure funding and partnerships
Increase awareness and collaboration by sharing the technical products, recommendations, and activities across the MITRE enterprise
Evaluating and comparing alternative architectures using qualitative and quantitative techniques; exploring large trade spaces
System Design and development (such as software development), systems modernization, and architecture
Represent the organization in external engagements
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of experience in software development, with a strong background in computer science and software engineering principles
Must be a US citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a US government clearance.
Proven experience in business development, innovation, and leadership roles
Excellent programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or C+
- Familiarity with cloud-based technologies, such as AWS or Azure
Strong understanding of moder n system or software engineering methodologies, including Agile and Scrum
Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference given to qualified candidates holding active clearance
Advanced degree in applicable Major
Knowledge of Unmanned and/or Autonomous Systems
Experience in Department of Defense , not-for-profit sector , or social impact organizations
Familiarity with Dev Sec Ops , continuous integration, and continuous deployment
Knowledge of machine learning, artificial intelligence, or data analytics
Experience with product management and marketing principles
Experience in systems and enterprise architecture
Familiarity of Model Based System Engineering ( MBSE ) and MBSE tools
xperience rendering objective evaluation of vendor products and approaches
