What will you help us create?

As a Product Development Engineer on our team, you will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and quality of consumer electronic products. We are looking for candidates who thrive in a fast paced start-up like environment and want to invent the future. In the role, you will wear many hats in working on the system design down to quick turn prototypes, manufacturing production process, testing, and quality control. You will play a role in defining processes and methods to improve the productivity of the entire team. You will identify and initiate investigations of production technologies, prototype and test solutions for product features, and design and validate production designs that deliver an exceptional user experience.

You will work in a small PD team to create a new experience and work with the team at large to ensure a functional and beautiful product. To be successful you need to be highly motivated, understand how to solve problems and dive deep while delivering to the highest standards.

You will demonstrate a strong working knowledge of mechanical systems, with expertise in systems integration; the desire to learn from new challenges and the problem solving and communication skills to work within a highly interactive and experienced team.

Candidates must show a hands-on passion for their work and be able to communicate their ideas and concepts both verbally and visually. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to integrate feedback and to respond quickly to changing contexts and work environments. In this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of mechanical systems, with expertise in systems integration

  • Lead the hiring process to build teams

  • Mentor junior engineers in good product design practice

  • Provide ongoing performance feedback and career management of team

  • Perform feature design and testing to meet program objectives

  • Perform test failure analysis and solution validation to complete successful product development

  • Lead field failure analysis and solution evaluation for production product issues

  • Support positive team interactions to accomplish program objectives

  • Provide cross-functional program integration support to insure team success

  • Manage schedules and milestones

  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Prepare and deliver updates to the Executive team when necessary

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent

  • 3+ years of experience, product development of consumer electronics

  • 1+ years of experience leading engineering teams

  • Strong 3D CAD skills (Creo or similar)

  • Product validation experience (Shock/Drop, Cycle Testing, Environmental Testing)

  • This position will require international travel; 20%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent

  • Knowledge of SolidWorks simulation or Ansys Finite Element analysis tools

  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume

  • Proven track record leading engineering teams through the whole development cycle

  • Demonstrated design experience with high volume/high finish consumer electronics enclosure materials

  • Demonstrated design experience integrating component modules (I/O, Cameras, Sensors, Displays, Batteries, PCBs, etc.)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of tooling and materials process validation (SPC, Cp, CpK)

  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills

  • Analytic problem solving skills, including knowledge of 8D, Six Sigma, DOE or similar disciplines

  • High tolerance for ambiguity and ability to turn broad program objectives into actionable design initiatives

  • Ability to lead and contribute during all phases of the project from initial concept to production ramp

  • Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally with all disciplines involved in specifying and engineering complex electronic products (for example, Industrial Design, Product Management, Electrical Engineering, Design Integrity, Tooling & Process Engineering, etc.)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $93,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
