This position is located at Central Office Bridge Office in Oakdale. This position will have the flexibility to telecommute, work a hybrid schedule, or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to complete a telework agreement. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office at least two days a week.

This position leads the Fabrication Methods Unit of the Construction and Operations Section of the Bridge Office and extended functions with the Structural Metals Unit, Bridge Asset Management Unit, and the Office of Traffic Engineering, Including:

  • Manage the Bridge Fabrication Methods Unit with the review and approval of steel shop drawings prepared by others, develop and maintain specifications for bearings expansion joint, modular bridge joint system (MBJS) prequalification requirements and approval product list (APL), and respond and resolve fabrication methods related issues and problems in design, construction, repair, maintenance, and shop fabrication for clientele inside and outside of MnDOT,

  • Provide expert advice to the Bridge Structural Metals Unit with structural engineering guidelines in bolting and welding capacity/design code compliance, structural fatigue/fracture performance/requirements, steel bridge construction practices, steel bridge maintenance and repair, bridge inspections, and review, structural evaluation/assessment, response and approval/reject of request for information (RFI) for shop drawings, request for deviation (RFD) in fabricating parts, and non-compliance reports (NCR) for fabricated steel components from fabricators/contractors,

  • Lead, as the expert liaison in MnDOT and the State, in performing structural assessment and preparing action/repair plans for owners (MnDOT districts and local agencies) of all Non-redundant Steel Tension Member (NSTM) bridges based on the fracture-critical bridge inspection reports. Lead in calling and chairing the emergency committee to meet, discuss and respond to the field critical findings during fracture-critical steel bridge inspections and come up with immediate action plans timely and,

  • Support and supervise the Traffic Structural Engineer in their duties to provide expertise in the AASHTO LRFD design, MASH compliance, fabrication, construction, TAMP and TAMS programs for asset inspection, maintenance, scoping needs for repairs/replacement, standards development, and research needs in deficiencies and performance problems for structural supports for highway signs, luminaires and traffic signals (SLTS) for the Office of Traffic Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure as a professional civil engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). If obtaining licensure through comity (reciprocity), a practice pending letter from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.

Three (3) years of experience as an Engineer Senior, or equivalent, that demonstrates experience with the following:

  • Interpretation of plans, specifications, shop drawings and welding procedures

  • Steel fabrication methods and shop practices;

  • Structural engineering principles, including design, analysis and response loading; and

  • Design codes, building codes, fabrication codes and material specifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with welding techniques and processes

  • Experience with Nondestructive Testing (NDT) equipment, techniques and procedures;

  • Experience with industry standards such as; American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Welding Society (AWS) specifications, American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC).
