APPRENTICE LINEWORKER

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direct supervision of a line supervisor, or journey line worker this employee will assist in the operation, maintenance and testing of transmission and distribution overhead and underground power lines and equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Training Receives instruction and training in the proper operation of electrical utility equipment including but not limited to: bucket trucks, line trucks, backhoe, underground/overhead line pullers, tensioners, backyard digger/derrick, forklift, along with hand tools related to the position.

Will enroll in the IPSA Apprenticeship Program within the year, receiving on the job training as well as classroom instruction as determined by IPSA instructors.

Work on energized circuits with qualified personnel, and progress as abilities justify. Progression may be as follows:

Year 1: 600 volt and under

Year 2: Single Phase Primary Lines

Year 3: Three Phase Primary Lines

Year 4: Three Phase Primary Lines

Work with voltages progressively during the apprenticeship period, including the use of hotline tools, protective cover and testing equipment.

Electrical Systems Will be trained on the construction and maintenance of the City's transmission system along with overhead and underground distribution system. Will assist in the installation of power equipment, maintain and rebuild existing power lines, and learn minor maintenance of substations and other electrical apparatus.

Will learn to install, maintain, and remove customer's services. Set and remove meters. Perform maintenance on street lights, transformers, fuses or any other piece of equipment that is part of the city's electrical system.

May participate in line switching procedures for both transmission and distribution systems. Gain a familiarity with circuit routing and load switching procedures to prepare for emergency situations and on-call shifts.

Will be trained to investigate customer service calls and service interruptions. Troubleshoot and repair or replace equipment that is faulty on any part of the electrical system, from City's receiving point to the customer's meter.

Safety Systems Will be educated in all safety aspects of the position. Understanding safety must be first and foremost in the mind for self and for others affected by actions.

Become educated on the APPA safety rules and use of appropriate PPE.

Miscellaneous Duties as Assigned Need the ability to climb wood poles with various height ranges and patrol lines, trim trees, etc.

May be required to work in inclement weather, odd hours, weekends as needed. During the last 12 months of apprenticeship participate in a rotational on-call schedule. During apprenticeship will be assisted by a journey lineworker. Must be able to respond to call-out within 30 minutes.

Obtain a knowledge of Spanish Fork City Construction Standards for installation and inspection of trenches, conduits, and equipment related to the electrical system.

Must meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others.

Must live within 30 minutes' travel time from Spanish Fork's city limits in order to respond to emergencies.

Other duties as assigned.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands Requires moderate to heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull or lift medium to heavy weights. Required to work in difficult working positions. May have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods.

Working Conditions Exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, chemicals and fumes, and prolonged high noise levels. Often works in and around vehicu ar traffic. May at times include exposure to high stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.

Hazards Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered. Line construction will involve working at heights along with underground applications.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

``` - Experience: Two years of experience as a groundman equipment operator OR one year of experience in lineman school and one year experience in a construction related field.

``` - Utah CDL: Class B Required within 6 months, Class A preferred with endorsements as necessary.
