Department of the Interior (DOI) Biological Science Technician in Sitka, Alaska
$29.98 to $38.97 per hours, plus a 3.00% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) which is subject to annual review and adjustment.
Temporary, full-time, approximately mid-May to end of October. The appointment may be extended for an additional period (not to exceed 1039 hours total employment). Persons selected may be eligible for rehire in future years. Schedule may involve weekend work or performance of duties before or after normal working hours. Government housing may be available. More than one position may be filled from this posting.
BENEFITS:
Temporary, seasonal, and intermittent employees on appointments expected to last at least 90 days and expected to work a schedule of 130 hours or more a calendar month, will be eligible to enroll in a Federal Employee Health Benefit (FEHB) health plan upon notification from their employing office. Eligible employees will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles, which will be deducted from bi-weekly earnings.
DUTIES: - You will work as a Biological Science Technician, GS-0404-08 at Sitka National Historical Park. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Performs basic assignments in collecting basic data from field investigations and making observations in which biological conditions are readily identifiable for the parks ecology, wildlife, fishery, and/or habitat conditions.
Analyzes data and reviews biological reports in an office and drafts reports, assigned portions of reports, or full reports. Prepares maps, graphs, and charts representing data.
Participates in phases of planning, organizing, and implementing of biological investigations that affect ecology, wildlife, fishery, and/or habitat conditions.
Performs progressively more complex duties supporting the investigations of the organization including gathering, organizing, and interpreting biological, ecological, pathological, public use data, or other information pertinent to the research studies and/or scientific investigations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work requires regular physical exertion such as walking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven and/or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping or reaching to observe, collect and/or record field data; or in some situations the work may require physical exertion to handle wild animals, prepare soil for planting, to scuba dive or operate a boat. Moderately heavy items, such as equipment packs weighing up to 50 pounds, must be lifted and carried on a regular basis. May be required to hike several miles in a day. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.
WORK CONDITIONS:
The work environment varies from office/laboratory settings to field sites. The work performed in the field involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects and wild animals. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.
