The Department of Chemistry has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/ Engineer 2.

This Research Scientist II is expected to independently evaluate, select, and apply scientific techniques and procedures to conduct research in the field of organic and inorganic materials synthesis under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dianne Xiao. This position will focus on ongoing work in the development of conjugated metal–organic and organic materials and characterization of their properties. The incumbent will rely on their education and applicable experience to exercise judgment and make adaptations and modifications to procedures or techniques to achieve optimal scientific data or results.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Research (75%) • Synthesize and characterize conjugated organic molecules. • Use coordination chemistry and dynamic covalent chemistry to convert conjugated monomers into extended crystalline frameworks and polymers. • Carry out density functional calculations to model conjugated systems. • Follow all lab safety regulations and work safely with hazardous chemicals. Receive all necessary safety training and maintain active training certifications. • Conduct laboratory experiments; take measurements and record observations, and collect, compile, process, and interpret data. Independently evaluate, select, apply, and troubleshoot ideas and standardized scientific procedures and techniques. Consult Professor Xiao concerning unusual problems and developments.

Laboratory administration (10%) • Monitor the work of junior research personnel to ensure that correct procedures are followed. Provide direction to assure that technical tasks and projects are completed in a timely manner. • Participate in the acquisition, management, and installation of equipment and/or devices relevant to current and upcoming research projects. • Participate in the preparation of new grant and contract proposals to secure research funding, including assessment of cost, scope, and schedule of projects. • Coordinate and collaborate with experimental collaborators within and outside the University on ongoing projects, taking the lead as appropriate on primary projects and within area of expertise. Participate in regular group meetings.

Presentation of results (10%) • Participate in the preparation of papers, presentations, and other scholarly reports. Present findings at scientific conferences, technical meetings, and presentations for research sponsors. • Participate in the preparation of project reports. Write about research contributions and edit material written by coworkers, especially contributions by more junior researchers, colleagues, and collaborators.

Other duties (5%) • Perform other related duties as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or scientific discipline and two years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Desired Qualifications Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field with at least four years of relevant and progressive experience, including the design, synthesis, characterization, and computational modeling of conjugated molecules and polymers, data analysis, and development and maintenance of organic synthesis and purification equipment. Experience in writing and presenting work with MS Office or comparable software. Demonstrated creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in conducting scholarly research.
