The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Cytology Technologist 2 .

WORK SCHEDULE

  • 100% FTE (40 hours per week)

  • Day Shift DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The department now employs 900 people who work at the award-winning University of Washington Medical Center (ranked among the top medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report), Harborview Medical Center (the region's only Level I Trauma center, known for innovations and excellence in trauma care and its centers of emphasis: Trauma, Burn, Neurosciences, AIDS/STD CARER, and mentally- and medically- vulnerable populations.), and many other clinical and research facilities in the area.   • Eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program as a UW employee PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform screening of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens, reporting of negative gynecological cases, and refer preliminary diagnosed non-negative gynecological and all non-gynecological cases to the pathologist

  • Perform quality control assessments of cytopreparation and rescreening of gynecologic cases

  • Perform laboratory specimen processing consisting of gynecologic and non-gynecologic slide preparation, manual staining and coverslipping of slides

  • Maintain staining setup and prepare chemical reagents according to laboratory procedures

  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of lab equipment and instruments in accordance with procedures, and documents work completed

  • Respond to inquiries concerning specimen requirements and case status

  • Assist in fine needle aspiration procedures and perform rapid on-site immediate assessment for fine needle aspirations and core needle biopsies, using telecytology when indicated

  • Must monitor and record daily documentation of the total number of slides examined and total number of hours spent screening at the University of Washington and at any other laboratory, and in accordance with CLIA/CAP regulations

  • Comply with lab policies, safety regulations, and state & federal requirements

  • Participate in training students, trainees and new employees

  • Perform the work of Cytology Technologist 1

  • Perform duties in in support of anatomic pathology services as assigned REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor of Science DegreeAND

  • Graduation from an Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredited school of cytotechnology or other organization approved by Health and Human Services (HHS)AND

  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry (BOR) certification as a Cytotechnologist (CT) or Specialist in Cytotechnology (SCT).AND

  • At least 3 years full-time experience as a cytotechnologist within the preceding 10 years.OR

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Sitting at desk and microscope use for majority of hours worked

  • Ability to multi-task and be flexible as priorities change throughout each day
