National Audubon Society Camp Counselor in Seattle, Washington

Seattle, Wa Full time JR346 Position Summary The summer camp counselor will be responsible for delivering our nature-themed summer camps. They will administer the day-to-day camp operations for one group of 12 children each week with assistance from 2-3 volunteer junior counselors. The camp curriculum has been developed specifically for our camp, but the counselor will be responsible for devising and employing activities to reach the curriculum goals. The Center offers five weeks of camps for children ages 6-9. The Seward Audubon Center summer camps are very popular. As a result, many campers are either returning campers or are siblings of previous campers. Our camp programs are entirely outdoors, and our location provides many opportunities for hikes and swimming. This position begins on July 2, 2024, and includes staff training from July 3 to July 5. Summer Nature Day Camp starts on July 8, 2024, and ends on August 9, 2024. The daily work hours are 8:00 AM through 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Compensation: $21.00 - $25.00 / hour Essential Functions

  • Developing and implement five weeks of ecology/nature-based curriculum.

  • Lead a group of up to 12 children for the day--long sessions.

  • Ensure all registration requirements have been met, including paid tuition, medical information, pick-up roster, and emergency contact information.

  • Manage registration and rosters using the CampDoc online portal.

  • Communicate with parents to provide camper preparation and updates on activities.

  • Maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment.

  • Learn and follow COVID safety protocols.

  • Train, schedule, and lead youth camp assistants.

  • Resolve conflicts and student needs in a caring and positive manner.

  • Coordinate special guest activities.

  • Ensure participants are safe and operating in areas free of hazards.

  • Set up and clean up camp materials and equipment.

  • Supervise campers and organize enrichment activities.

  • Keep track of supplies and materials and address potential needs.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have four year's experience leading youth camps.

  • Knowledge of or interest in local ecology and natural history.

  • A degree in environmental studies is preferred.

  • Experience with CampDoc preferred.

  • Ability to teach natural history concepts and the desire to work outdoors and lead hikes.

  • Experience working with children preferred.

  • Strong oral communication skills, especially when speaking with camp parents and guardians.

  • Ability to work well as part of our team.

  • Must be able to commit to the entire period of work.

  • Willing to work outdoors in varying terrains and weather conditions for extended periods with or without accommodation.

  • Experienced swimmer

  • Must have current immunizations/medical forms; CPR and First Aid certification is a plus.
