Who will you be working with? This role reports to the Vice President, Regional Services - Asia Pacific and functional to Vice President, Engineering Transit Service.

Where is the position located? This is a full-time role based in Rydalmere (NSW) or Keysborough (Victoria)

The Engineering Manager will have active participation in the company’s strategic plan and is accountable to ensure the achievement of the Engineering action plan.

The Engineering Manager will drive the continuous improvement process across Transit and is accountable for encouraging and engaging employees in the positive process of continuous improvement of services, systems and processes.

The effectiveness of this position is measured by the achievement of Transit engineering objectives, specifically time to close out engineering issues and proactiveness in continuous improvement activities.

Primary Purpose

  • Leading and managing the Engineering team to ensure the achievement of business plan objectives and project outcomes;

  • Providing specialised and expert advice as a recognised engineering authority on Engineering related activities;

  • Delivering high level professional, strategic and technical liaison, consultancy and advice, to internal and external stakeholders;

  • Leading and directing specialised service across the Global Transit BU;

  • Define and lead Product Support in accordance with the Strategic Business Plan; and Maintaining and administering external accreditation (e.g. Transport for NSW AEO certification).

  • Delivering on the ground support for OEM products.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Providing technical leadership and oversight to a multidisciplinary team of professionals, to collaboratively develop and deliver solutions ensuring they provide for the best engineering and operation performance of the product or system in a timely and effective manner.

  • Lead and direct the Engineering team through coordination, meetings and monitor progress against schedules to ensure on budget delivery of products in line with the contract description and quality standards, whilst ensuring customer satisfaction.

  • Active participation in the Transit Services Group engineering committee

  • Coordinate the multi-disciplinary engineering teams to ensure that sufficient engineering competence and expertise is applied to all designs and design changes.

  • Lead, coach, mentor and develop staff skills in required areas to ensure all staff are highly skilled and motivated individuals.

  • Ensure the structure of the engineering team, and the competency of individuals within the ANZ team, supports the level and recognition of ‘centre of expertise’.

  • Ensure there are sufficient resources assigned to execute the work.

  • Interface with Operations Department, Service Department and Sister Companies on product development and prototype manufacture.

  • Provide engineering reviews with bid teams.

  • Provide technical support to business development/sales.

  • Implement and and maintain a proficient level of compliance to Transit Engineering procedures.

  • Educate the engineering staff in the regulatory and procedural requirements relating to design, installation and commissioning engineering activities.

  • Ensure adequate supervision of design related decision making by subordinate staff.

  • Keep the Senior Management Team informed of any significant issues or developments that may adversely impact on the technical integrity of the relevant activities.

  • Reinforce a ‘high performance culture’ encouraging innovation and continuous improvement, including the facilitation of continuous improvement initiatives within the Engineering BU.

  • Lead the implementation of strategic improvement processes to maximize the re-use of existing designs in new projects; improve durability and reliability testing; and improve the quality of designs at customer release.

  • Manage compliance with applicable national and international legislation, standards and licensing requirements.

  • Stay abreast of technology and engineering trends and champion engineering best practices.

  • Monitor and review schedules to ensure timely completion and report progress and cost.

  • Coordinate the efforts between engineering functions to optimize all cost and customer requirements

  • Provide Technical support for customer issues resolution.

  • Prepare annual budget request for projects, estimating staffing and equipment supply needs based on recent trends and planned activities.

  • Establish positive working relationships with key clients especially to understand their needs and discuss possible solutions.

  • Promote Wabtec’s EHS programs by setting a high standard for safety and environment and displaying leadership by encouraging the involvement of all staff in achieving a safe and healthy workplace.

  • Accept responsibility to act in a safe manner at all times and to work within the safety systems developed in the workplace.

  • Comply with the requirements of the QSE policy, related procedures and other relevant management system requirements.

  • Play a leading role in supporting the safety culture by promoting and demonstrating safe behaviour and practices, identifying continuous improvement opportunities, reporting incidents/accidents and identifying hazards and unsafe acts.

  • Apply appropriate risk management strategies as an integral part of all activities.

  • Provide input to the review of EHS as part of Management Review.

  • Commitment to Quality, EHS requirements.

What do we want to know about you?

  • Formally recognised degree qualified in Engineering;

  • Valid motor vehicle driver license;

  • Rail Industry Safety Induction (RISI) qualifications preferred

  • Strategic management and negotiation skills;

  • Complex analytical interpretation and problem-solving skills;

  • Ability to operate successfully in a matrix organisation.

  • Ability to provide strong technical leadership while working in a global matrix organisation coupled with people and project management skills;

  • Business, communication, change management and customer service skills;

  • Demonstrated initiative and sound organisation/time management skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to identify improvements, determine priorities, multi-task and effectively and efficiently meet deadlines;

  • Excellent computer skills including information retrieval, analysis and compilation of data and proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Project; and

  • A customer centric focus.

  • Member of Institute Engineers Australia- Chartered Status Preferred;

  • Previous extensive engineering experience in either rail, aerospace, automotive, defense or pharmaceutical industries;

  • Demonstrated experience and abilities to effectively influence the output of a large number of employees including management of cross-functional technical teams by providing leadership, coordination, consultation, coaching and motivation and deliver desired outcomes;

  • Experience in developing project plans, allocating, managing and coordinating relevant resources and reviewing progress to ensure delivery of agreed project outcomes.

  • Domestic and International travel will be required from time to time.

  • May be required to work outside of normal working hours, as the role demands, conduct out of hours work and/or be on call to attend and investigate incidents and conduct compliance inspections.

  • Meet any applicable Rail Safety Medical Assessments and training requirements.
