GAP Solutions Inc Scientist (Neuroscience) in Rockville, Maryland

Position Objective: Provide services as a Scientist (Neuroscience) in support of the overall functions of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The successful applicant will be responsible for performing independent and cutting-edge research on studies related to the role of thalamocortical circuits in the development of cortical networks and function. They will be expected to broaden the technical and intellectual capacity supporting the SCCN and develop cutting-edge tools and resources. In addition, the individual will support and train lab members, establish and conduct collaborative research, attend and present at national and international meetings, and assist in writing manuscripts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advance the science in the laboratory through new procedures and discoveries.

  • Design and conduct experiments and studies requiring the application of a broad professional knowledge of scientific theories and principles. 2

  • Independently direct and conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis in the development of novel research treatments. 3

  • Work with postdoc/biological scientists to perform statistical analysis for research projects. 4

  • Experience and capacity to implement techniques such as transcriptomics, optogenetics, and cell/ slice culture are also preferred. 1

  • Train staff on the proper usage of laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Submit and gain approval of laboratory animal study protocols.

  • Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts. 5

  • Coordinate projects being developed in the laboratory, proposing SAR strategies and monitoring their progress.

  • Prepare oral presentations and posters for internal and external groups/conferences.

  • Co-author manuscripts on research projects; publish in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Search existing literature for new and/or relevant techniques.

  • Provide scientific and technical expertise to all visiting fellows, post-docs, and technicians.

  • Clean Equipment - Ad-Hoc.

  • Inspect Equipment - Ad-Hoc.

  • Meet with lab members to present updates - Ad- Hoc.

    Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Biology, Cognitive Science and Biopsychology, or a related discipline. Postdoctoral experience in at least one of the following fields: biological psychiatry, molecular neuroanatomy, molecular biology, cognitive behavior, nonhuman primate neurobiology, MRI, and electrophysiology.

  • A Master’s degree and 5 years of experience is equivalent to a Ph.D.

  • A minimum of two years of experience and capacity to implement techniques such as transcriptomics, optogenetics, and cell/ slice culture.

  • The successful applicant will have at least two years of experience and will be responsible for performing independent and cutting-edge research on studies related to the role of thalamocortical circuits in the development of cortical networks and function.

  • The candidate will be expected to broaden the technical and intellectual capacity within SCCN and develop cutting-edge tools and resources.

  • Experience with animal handling: non-human primates.

  • Experience with data analysis.

  • Skilled in PowerPoint, Outlook, and Python.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
