Cummins Inc. Applied Mechanics Engineer in Pune, India
DESCRIPTION
Key Responsibilities:
Investigate product and system problems, understand causal mechanisms, recommend appropriate actions, and document results with guidance from more experienced team members.
Execute and improve established processes primarily documented in detailed local and global work instructions (EPs) required in Engineering Standard Work (ESW) and/or Design Validation Plans (DVP&R).
Develop specialized computational tools and methods to support the Design and Validation processes and enable high-confidence decision-making.
Obtain input from Design, Thermal Sciences, Materials, and Product Validation teams to deliver computer models and results for key structural performance parameters.
Use formal training in Statics, Dynamics, Machine Design, Mechanics of Materials, Failure Analysis, Engineering Materials, and tool-specific training (ANSYS, FE-Safe, GT, AVL, Franc3D, Sysweld, Simufact) to make design decisions based on numerical predictions.
Own problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services with increasing technical complexity and ambiguity as experience is gained.
Provide independent execution of established work processes and systems while developing technology or product knowledge.
Engage in the improvement of systems and processes.
Coordinate and direct work among technicians and/or temporary student employees.
Contribute effectively toward team goals, exhibit influence within a workgroup, and continue to develop proficiency in critical competency areas.
Additional details of Key Responsibilities:
This Aftermarket product-focused position applies knowledge of Finite Element Analysis, engineering principles and design practices to create optimized design concepts and mechanical design specifications considering the application, cost, weight, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability.
This role effectively communicates the capability of a design concept to meet cross-functional requirements including assessment of alternative and competitive design concepts and works effectively across cross-functional disciplines to develop corporate and customer requirements including those required to resolve product issues.
Obtains input from stakeholders such as technical managers, project leaders, other product/project engineers, and channel partners to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.
Conducts numerical computations via third-party and in-house tools to determine the structural performance of components and systems.
Evaluate software and methods and provide improvement recommendations. The results from the computer models are used to determine the validity of the design to meet the customer requirements. Design recommendations are then provided as needed.
Provides independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems, or services with greater elements of ambiguity over the senior or lead engineer level and with full accountability to the project team.
Typically involves Current Product Support, Value Engineering, ReCon specific Salvage Development & Salvage Implementation stream work.
Obtains input and negotiates with Design, Thermal Sciences, Materials, and Product Validation and delivers key structural performance parameters like motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, sound power, etc. to Design and Product Validation.
Makes decisions in structural design (materials and their processing as well as geometry) that impact structural performance (motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, sound power, etc.) of components and systems.
Good understanding of Crack propagation analysis, Welding Simulation & Heat Treatment analysis tools.
Also, support exploratory FEA analysis requirements for R&T projects in the Structural as well as CFD domain.
Applies and supports the execution of processes such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist, Design Review, and tools such as iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, ANSYS Workbench required to enable high-quality component and subsystem-level design decision making and design refinement.
Typically involves, concept drawing support, Design CAD study support, GD&T Tolerance stack up, DVA, DBJ, Press Fit Calculations, Interference Fit calculations, Virtual Builds, Parts Modeling - 2D drawing to CAD model on legacy parts.
