SHRS is seeking an academic advisor to help prepare students for lives of impact by connecting them with educational experiences tailored to their specific needs and goals. The advisor serves as the primary academic liaison for a diverse caseload of SHRS students within a specific program, and as a secondary advisor to students in other programs. Working as part of a team within the Center for Academic Advising and Student Success, the advisor helps students identify academic and career goals, assists with appropriate course selection and degree planning, connects students to appropriate resources, and monitors their degree progress, all while building on a foundation of advising theory and practice. The advisor may participate in and assist with the planning of unit and/or University-sponsored activities aimed at improving student success. The advisor may collaborate with other departments in planning events for applicants to SHRS. The advisor will use various platforms to fulfill these responsibilities and must be adaptable to new technologies.

The advisor must be a committed advocate for a diverse student body. The position requires patience, flexibility, and a sincere desire to assist students. Excellent organization, communication skills, timeliness, cooperation, collaboration, and accuracy are essential. The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to prioritize and manage multiple simultaneous demands.

A master's degree and at least 2 years of advising/student service experience are required. A master's degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education administration, or a closely related field may be substituted for experience.

Job Summary

Utilizes advanced advising knowledge, theory, and practical experience to serve as an academic liaison for students to identify academic and career goals, select appropriate courses, and plan for degree attainment. Manages small to medium-sized, moderately complex projects.

Essential Functions

Serve as the primary academic advisor for an undergraduate academic program at SHRS.

Meet regularly with students to identify their academic goals, help them select appropriate courses, and ensure their progress towards degree completion.

Identify and refer students to other resources that will enhance students 'personal, academic, and professional development

May serve as a secondary academic advisor for an additional SHRS program, in order to provide support when needed and ensure that all students can be served at all times.

The advisor must develop a deep knowledge and understanding of the relevant SHRS programs. They must also use and learn new technology proficiently and change practice with changes in technology.

 

Physical Effort

Must be able to lift or carry 25 pounds or less.
