Responsibilities The Student Nurse Technician (SNT) position is a developmental position; Incumbents will be given opportunities to provide basic nursing care and procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the academic setting and validated by VA staff in order to provide care to patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions in a health care setting. The significant factor is that they provide care under close supervision, are learning to perform complex nursing skills, and will refer issues/questions to supervisors. The SNT position is responsible for appropriately utilizes glucose monitoring machine to collect and document appropriate glucose readings for assigned veteran, observation of patients, performs aspects of nursing care to meet patient's needs for the following: Personal Hygiene Physical comfort Activity Exercise Rest, Nutrition, Elimination, Prevention of Skin Breakdown, Rehabilitative Aspects of Care Engages in-group activities such as off-station trips, reality orientation, current events and other therapeutic groups Sets up patient care related equipment, Organizes and obtains routine supplies and equipment, Assists with orienting patient/family to unit routines and policies Monitors patients according to levels of observations i.e. (I:I Veterans as well as Veterans observation status.), and Performing and documenting prescribed medical treatment and interventions for patients, such as diabetic urine testing and blood testing, simple dressing changes. The position also begins to utilize rehabilitative principles to promote patient independence and recovery ,encouraging and guiding them in bowel and bladder training and all aspects of AM. Physical Requirements: The population of male and female Veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Enrolled in a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. All Student Nurses must be enrolled in a Bachelors of Science Nursing professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency AND accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN formerly the NLNAC) OR the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Also, enrollment in a program equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes an approved course of study. References: Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3 Note: Student Nurse Technicians will be paid their regular straight time base rate, but will not receive any additional premium pay for working on a legal holiday, Sundays or at night. Additionally, students will receive their regular straight time pay for time off, if relieved or prevented from working by the occurrence of a legal holiday. No compensation will be paid to students for working overtime; however, students may be granted equivalent time off for service in excess of 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week. A minimum of two(2) 8-hour shifts per pay period must be completed to maintain the position. As a trainee, students may not be assigned to compressed work schedules, except when rotating with an assigned preceptor working through a pre-assigned compressed work schedule. This temporary trainee rotation must be limited as previously mentioned. When appointed on a full-time or part-time basis, students are entitled to accrue annual and sick leave in accordance with the provisions of 5 U.S.C. 63.
