Summary:
Collins Aerospace Applied Research & Technology seeks candidates with proven research credentials in technoeconomic analysis of emerging large-scale telecommunications networks to join the Connected & Real-time Systems Group in Cork, Ireland. This exciting research opportunity is focused on delivering next-generation aeronautical Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) services at scale, particularly for low-altitude ATM and UTM operations.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong mix of theoretical knowledge and applied experience in the design of high-level operational concepts, performance-driven network architecture optimization, and economic modelling of network deployment and operational costs. This role joins a larger team of CNS specialists addressing emerging concepts such as high-altitude and very low-altitude airspace operations, across ATM, HAPS, IAM, U-Space, and space-based applications.
This is a research focused role to shape the future of airspace operations from concept definition through to demonstration. Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate outstanding capabilities applicable to one or more of:
Technoeconomic analysis of large-scale communications networks & technology alternatives, including cost of deployment (CAPEX), operation (OPEX), and return on investment (ROI).
Concept of operations (CONOPS) and Operational Service and Environment Definition (OSED) analysis of emerging operational concepts, aimed at informing analysis of alternative deployment models.
High-level analysis, modelling, and simulation of next-generation CNS services, and particularly framing the associated economic modelling in terms of network and system level performance.
Familiarity with communications technologies relevant to aeronautical applications is desirable, including datalinks, GNSS, 5G/Future-G, ADSB/MLAT, and radar. Knowledge of EU and US technology roadmaps towards future air traffic management & emerging telecommunications technologies is also desirable but not essential.
Primary Responsibilities
Contribute to a growing research agenda for future airspace operations within the Collins Aerospace Advanced Technology research community, including supporting technical strategy and business development.
Execute R&D activities within an international research community, including technology development within collaborative multi-national research programs.
Provide competitive advantage for Collins Aerospace business units as part of a multidisciplinary and international team of experts.
Qualifications
Requires a PhD degree in field relevant to technoeconomic analysis for airspace operations and systems, or a relevant Masters degree with 2-4 years of industrial experience.
Motivated self-starter with a strong enthusiasm to grow technologies, and business value propositions.
Able to partner with universities, government agencies, national labs, and professional organizations to meet organizational objectives within time and budget constraints.
Willing to champion and challenge the technical status quo, and adapt to new challenges beyond original field of expertise.
