A challenging opportunity is available for a self-motivated park service professional to fill a Park Ranger position at St. Andrews State Park. This position requires strong visitor service, maintenance, administration, and resource management skills.

Where You Will Work:

St. Andrews State Park is located in Panama City, Florida. With the Gulf of Mexico on one side and St. Andrews Bay on the other, visitors who crave swimming, snorkeling or surfing will be more than satisfied.

Besides boasting a mile-and-a-half of pristine beaches for fishing and swimming, St. Andrews also offers the chance for visitors to stroll through pines and along dunes and coastal plant communities or stay overnight in the campground.

    Pay:

    $2,730 month/$32,760 annually

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    Visitor Services – Explains facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions. Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations. Provides natural and cultural history interpretive programs and services via tours, walks, and campfire programs.

    Resource Management – Implements ecological burning plan for fire type plant communities; recognizes communities, utilizes control burning techniques and maintains fire lanes. Implements vegetation and wildlife management plans; recognizes communities and maintains optimum species control via natural and chemical means. Implements site restoration projects such as reforestation and erosion control.

    Maintenance - Constructs, maintains, and repairs small buildings, fences, trails, service roads, fire lanes, boardwalks, campsites, picnic sites, boat ramps, docks and all other necessary facilities. Maintains cleanliness of grounds and facilities.

    Administration – Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects including fees, receipts, visitor use, visitor contacts, patrols, wildlife sightings and population counts, accidents, crisis and miscellaneous incidents, vehicle, boat, and equipment operations, property records, purchase orders and requisitions, etc. Answers telephone, operates radio equipment and maintains logs. Answers correspondence and maintains park files. Perform computer and cash register transactions and reconciliation of receipts.

    Protection – Interprets park rules pertaining to all natural, historical, and archaeological facilities, and resources and use thereof for the enjoyment of the visitor. Opens park gates and entrance building. Secures buildings and gates before departing at closing time. Is responsible for cash fund security. Informs visitors of possible hazards in unimproved areas.

    Perform other duties as required.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:

  • Assorted power/gas tools and equipment to perform physical labor.

  • Computer and cash register transactions and reconciliation of receipts.

  • Good public relation and ability to deal with people effectively

    Ability to:

  • Identify and investigate problems

  • Understand and apply rules, directives, laws, regulations, and policies.

  • Prepare reports

  • Perform a variety of skilled trade functions

  • Conduct various environmental and cultural history interpretive programs and services

  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing

  • Effectively work with others

  • Open and close park gate and secure facilities

  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Maintain a valid driver’s license

  • Successfully complete ranger academy

  • Successfully complete a background and fingerprint check

    This position is a Position of Trust.
