Matanuska-Susitna Borough Road Maintenance Technician (RFT) in Palmer, Alaska
Job Summary
This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of Borough roads and streets.
Knowledge of modern principles of road construction and maintenance, familiarity with Mat-Su Borough road system, skilled in oral and written communication in person and electronically.
Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork.
Pay Grade
L1 - L5 - DOE
Minimum Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent.
Five (5) years of experience in a similar position, sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
Possession of a valid Class A, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the State of Alaska and possession of a valid Department of Transportation medical card is required. Candidates that demonstrate an ability to obtain their Class A CDL within 6 months of hire may be considered. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check and post-offer employment physical.
This position is subject to federal drug and alcohol testing provisions.
Completion of required Incident Command System (ICS) courses in accordance with established Borough policy.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Provides direction to road construction and maintenance crews in the repair and maintenance of roadways, utility facilities, and underground drainage systems.
- Responds to emergency and disaster-related events.
- Conducts pre-construction preparations and briefings.
- Ensures compliance with safe work practices and construction standards.
- Provides training to assigned personnel.
- Conducts pavement patching, culvert thawing, crack sealing operations, sewer system repairs, and storm drain maintenance.
- Operates and maintains steam boilers, asphalt reclaimers and other road maintenance equipment.
- Responds to and resolves complaints from Borough residents.
- Directs employees in road striping operations.
- Operates and maintains brush removal equipment and supervises brush removal and tree-cutting operations.
- Directs the use of street sweeping equipment and snow plows.
- Directs construction, repair and maintenance of road signs.
- Performs related duties.
