NORWALK COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Title Special Education Paraeducator
Reports to Building Assistant Principal
Position Purpose To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
Under supervision of certified teacher, prepares for classroom activities.
Works with small groups of students or one-on-one with a student to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
Assists individual children in need of attention.
Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up by the teacher.
Assists teacher with non-instructional classroom duties, such as milk, toilet and clothing routines.
Assists in drill work.
Assists with reading and storytelling.
Assists with groups of students in the Library.
Assists with supervision on the playground.
Assists with supervision on field trips.
Participates in inservice training as specified by the Principal.
Teach new concepts or lessons at the discretion of the teacher.
Maintain a reliable attendance record
Perform other duties as assigned

Ability to read and comprehend labels, signs and written instructions
Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing

A past history of good attendance
Qualifications Profile
1-3 years experience working with students preferred
Experience working in a school setting a plus
Physical Requirements
Physical requirements vary by individual job assignment but requires a minimum of the following physical requirements: Walking, standing, bending, carrying, climbing, lifting minimum of 50 pounds, driving, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, and stooping.
Working Conditions: Varied.
Terms of Employment 9-month work year. Wage and work year to be established by the Board. Employment subject to provisions of board policy, state and federal law.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Assistant Principal, or in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of staff.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt.
