Denali Universal Services (DUS) Food Service Worker (Kitchen Helper): North Slope in North Slope, Alaska

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Head Cook, the employee is responsible for preparing food as instructed, washing pots, pans and dishes, stocking, cleaning, assisting staff in kitchen area and other duties as assigned.

  • Rotational Schedule: 2 weeks on/2 weeks off OR 3 weeks on/ 3 weeks off (depending on camp site)

  • 12 hour shifts in a remote camp on the North Slope

  • Lodging and food provided at the job site

  • Point of Hire: Anchorage, AK

  • Required Drug Screening

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Previous kitchen experience

  • State of Alaska Food Worker Card or able to obtain

  • Able to proficiently speak, read, understand and write English

  • Maturity of judgement and behavior.

  • Safety and customer service oriented.

  • Must be able to work in a busy kitchen environment with a positive and team-oriented attitude.

  • Must be able to pass the Company’s pre-employment screening process, including drug screen, criminal background investigation, and a post-offer physical/functional capacity evaluation.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Training and application in prevention of food borne illness, HACCP, sanitation and personal hygiene

  • Previous experience in camps and/or related area experience.

  • Strong work ethic.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Wash and clean dishes, pots, pans, and other kitchen equipment.

  • Perform preparation duties such as rinsing, peeling, slicing, and dicing fruit and vegetables.

  • Assist with wrapping, date-labeling, and storing food items.

  • Clean and organize work areas, equipment, utensils, and service stations.

  • Follow guidelines to ensure correct serving temperatures.

  • Operate a variety of kitchen utensils to weigh, measure, mix, wash, peel, cut, grind, stir, strain, etc.

  • Assist in the preparation of hot and/or cold foods as directed.

  • Inspect workstations for compliance with service standards.

  • Set up stations with entrées, soups, salads, breads, condiments, other food products, as needed.

  • Serve and replenish food from counters and steam tables and break down stations at the end of meal periods.

  • Provide general stocking duties.

  • Engage in courteous interactions with customers in the serving and dining areas.

  • Escalate customer concerns and complaints to management.

  • Comply with relevant safety, hygiene, and service standards and procedures at all times.

  • Work safely and maintain a safe work environment for all employees and customers.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The employee will be required to live and work in a remote and confined workspace for extended periods of time and exposure to work assignments consisting of twelve-hour days. Must be able to work day or night shifts as required. The majority of the work is performed in a remote setting with a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities and abilities. There may be a lack of immediate access to critical medical services as well as urban community services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee’s work requires routine walking, standing, bending and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Candidate will be required to successfully complete a post-offer pre-hire physical and Functional Capacity Exam.
