Description

Overview:

The Associate Research Scientist (ARS) will serve as the Associate Director (AD) of CSSW Center for Justice (CFJ) and work closely with the Director and faculty members to manage all programs of the Center. The ARS will oversee communications, grants development, fundraising, research, financial matters, and overall strategy for each of the Center's projects. The ARS will collaborate with other Centers and departments at the Columbia School of Social Work and the broader university. This position will report to Louisa Gilbert, who is a Professor at CSSW and currently serving as a PI on CSSW CFJ grants, with task supervision from Cheryl Wilkins who is the Director of CSSW CFJ.

Basic Function:

Reporting to the Co-Director, the Associate Director will be responsible for overseeing the Center's leadership development programs, including the Collective Leadership Institute and the Beyond the Bars Fellowship. They will work closely with the program directors to conduct research to assess the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of academic outputs and non-academic impact of the programs. The ARS will direct the annual Beyond the Bars Conference by examining how we can accelerate transformational change in the critical, interconnected areas of oppressive carceral, economic, and educational systems. Additionally, the ARS will be a core member of the Center's leadership team, participating in strategic decision-making and Advisory Board activities.

In addition to CFJ duties, the ARS will be responsible for developing public service and research activities and, identifying and applying for funding for areas related to issues of accountability, restorative justice; transformative justice; decarceration; patriarchy; and community-based research. In addition, the ARS will develop and submit grant proposals and prepare and submit manuscripts for publication from his or her own research.

REAPPOINTMENT IS CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Research and Evaluation

-Oversee all research activities of the Center

-Write research grant proposals for the Center and assist with grant reporting

-Conduct research to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of Center projects

-Initiate collaborations with CSSW/CU faculty to conduct research related to the Center's programs and goals

-Serve as PI or an investigator for the Center-related research projects

-Ensure that all research conducted affiliated with the Center employs best community participatory research practices and adheres to IRB protocols.

Program Management and Oversight

- Oversee leadership development programs, including the Collective Leadership Institute and Beyond the Bars Fellowship

- Supervise program staff and support overall program success

- Oversee research projects associated with the Center

- Provide guidance to evolve and improve leadership programming

- Direct the annual Beyond the Bars Conference, overseeing all aspects from theme development to workshop coordination

Communications

- Oversee the Center's communications work, supervising the Policy and Communications Manager

- Ensure consistent and effective communications through website, social media, and other channels

- Maintain up-to-date materials about the Center's work for funders, partners, and communities

Fundraising and Financial Oversight

- Support the Co-Director and fundraising consultants in identifying potential funding sources

- Build relationships with potential and current funders

- Manage financial oversight of supervised programs, including leadership development programs and the Beyond the Bars Conference

Staff Supervision and Leadership

- Directly supervise the Leadership Development Program Manager and the Policy and Communications Manager

- Participate in the Center's leadership team, contributing to overall decision-making and strategy

- Engage in decisions regarding funding, spending, hiring, vision and mission, and partnerships

- Participate in the work of the Center's Advisory Board

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

- PhD in a relevant field

- Demonstrated experience in program management and oversight

- Strong communication and leadership skills

- Proficiency in fundraising and financial management

- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders
