The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Supervisor will leverage their thorough knowledge and understanding of quality control and quality assurance to maintain the laboratory and ensure regulatory readiness. As the team lead, the Supervisor will direct, train, and manage a team of Laboratory Coordinators, establishing a high-performance culture focused on quality, accuracy, consistency, and continuous improvement.

To be successful in this role, the Supervisor should have an active New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license and six years relevant experience in a laboratory setting, including at least three years experience as a diagnostic andrologist, advanced QA/QC knowledge, experience with SOPs and improvement projects, and team leadership skills.

Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Andrology laboratory, including directing and assisting with the performance of laboratory procedures, managing a team of laboratory assistants and laboratory coordinators, leading quality monitoring and performance initiatives, and ensuring inspection-readiness and compliance with federal, state, and local laws and guidelines.
  • Performs full scope of Andrology clinical laboratory procedures and administrative work, including:
    • Running daily assays.
    • Initiating specimen chain of custody, documentation, and witness procedures, as needed.
    • Preparing patient or donor semen samples for treatment types such as cryopreservation, insemination, ICSI, and IUI.
    • Processing TESE samples for ICSI treatment, cryopreservation and thawing.
    • Process and evaluate semen analysis samples; perform and interpret manual and automated diagnostic semen analyses; and cryopreserve client depositor patient samples.
    • Reporting on and signing off on results.
    • Providing patients instructions for onsite male specimen production and answering patient questions as appropriate, as needed for backup.
    • Accurately collecting and documenting patient and procedure data in patient charts and EMR.
  • Maintains laboratory standard operations manual, making and documenting all appropriate changes. Ensures that standard operating procedures are followed and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Oversees daily and ongoing laboratory maintenance, ensuring that the overall condition of the laboratory is clean and safe according to regulatory and department standards. Ensures that all safety protocols are being followed. Escalates any issues as appropriate.
  • Oversees maintenance and servicing of andrology laboratory equipment: Establishes quality standards and develops operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures. Runs new instrument and quality control validation studies. Ensures that quality controls, calibration, and instrument preventive maintenance checks are performed and documented as needed. Arranges equipment replacement, service, calibrations, and controls in compliance with internal schedule.
  • Maintains quality management system for Andrology laboratory. Maintains quality results by participating in the hospital quality assurance program, performing proficiency surveys, reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs, making adjustments in policy and procedures, generating reports, and maintaining records. Signs off on QC forms.
  • Reviews Proficiency Testing results, performs root-cause analysis and reports results to the Laboratory Director and Director of Embryology.
  • Collaborates with Director of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs to ensure inspection-readiness of Andrology laboratory and compliance with federal and state regulatory guidelines to maintain licensure. Ensures that all necessary permits are current and works with management and Director of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs to renew permits as required. Performs corrective action review after NYSDOH inspections and reports out to Laboratory Director.
  • Reviews audits and quality indicator worksheets looking for negative trends, reporting to the Laboratory Director and Director of Embryology.
  • Oversees inventory management for the laboratory. Maintains clinical supplies inventory by monitoring stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, and placing and expediting orders for supplies when necessary.
  • Reports out for Andrology laboratory in divisional meetings and routinely reports on progress to Laboratory Director, Director of Embryology and Division Chief. Attends program meetings as applicable.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned within scope of practice and/or training.
  • Rotating weekends and holiday coverage required.

People

  • Supervises work and performance of Andrology laboratory assistants and lab coordinators to ensure that quality and regulatory standards are met.
  • Establishes a culture of coaching and mentoring to facilitate continuous professional development and maintain an efficient, quality-focused environment that contributes to excellence in patient care. Promotes staff professionalism, performance, and development with coaching, training, and feedback.
  • Oversees onboarding and training of new and current Andrology lab staff. Identifies roadblocks to performance, needed areas of improvement, and opportunities for growth. Develops and implements training and development plans. Works with HR to develop remediation/action plans as needed.
  • Manages Andrology laboratory staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Collaborates with HR team and management to support human resources process for the unit, including hiring, onboarding, payroll, performance appraisals, promotions, and terminations.
  • Ensures that staff productivity benchmarks and quality measures are achieved. Develops remediation plans as needed. Monitors unit metrics and goals to measure effectiveness of retention strategies.
  • Models professional and ethical interactions with all patients, visitors, vendors, faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrates self-development and keeps current on a variety of industry topics.

Strategy and Continuous Improvement

  • Establishes a culture of continuous improvement. Continuously seeks and implements operational improvements toward increased quality, efficiency, and performance. Escalates improvement opportunities as needed to management.
  • Assists the Laboratory Director and Director of Embryology in keeping the Andrology laboratory current and competitive by investigating and trialing new diagnostic tests to improve diagnostic services.
  • Monitors Andrology laboratory key performance indicators and implements performance improvement initiatives as needed. Makes recommendations on KPI measurement to Laboratory Director and Director of Embryology.
  • Leads or participates in projects and special assignments to support departmental or divisional strategy and continuous improvement initiatives. Engages laboratory staff to contribute to projects as relevant. Reports on project progress and makes recommendations.
  • Implements change management strategies that support organizational goals and process improvement initiatives. Ensures that support mechanisms are in place to facilitate employee adoption. Ensures that communication of changes is cascaded throughout unit and feedback channels are in place. Works with the management to address any escalated concerns and identified risks as needed.
  • Prepares and presents ad hoc reports and/or presentations for administrative or clinical leaders about operational challenges or issues, as needed.
  • Develops and maintains a productive, collaborative relationship with departmental and clinical management and representatives.
  • Take initiative to resolve patient safety and patient experience concerns within the scope of practice/training/education.

Other

  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency, departmental, Service Corp, and organizational policies and procedures for all staff.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality according to HIPAA requirements at all times.
  • Keep current on all organizational, department, and patient privacy policies (e.g., infection control, HIPAA) and required trainings.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or other field acceptable for licensure.
  • A minimum of four years' relevant experience, including 3 years' experience as a diagnostic andrologist in an infertility practice.
  • New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
  • Advanced QA/QC knowledge in an Andrology laboratory setting.
  • Experience participating in or leading quality, operations, and/or performance improvement projects in a laboratory setting. Proficiency in planning and executing technical and operational projects with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience developing or maintaining standard operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in problem assessment and collaborative problem solving in a technical setting. Adaptability to new and changing situations.
  • Strong data literacy, including the ability to read, analyze, interpret, validate, and communicate instrument data and results of technical reports and analysis.
  • Team leadership skills, including strong communication, feedback, and conflict management skills; emotional intelligence; and the ability to foster collaboration, promote a culture of goal-achievement, coach and develop others, and lead others through new and changing situations. Ability to handle situations with respect, tact, and sensitivity.
