Our client has a contract opportunity for a Systems Engineer. This is a fully remote role. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Systems Engineer to join our team. This role focuses on automating solutions, managing our on-premise and cloud infrastructure, and providing top-tier support. A strong emphasis is placed on deep expertise in VMware vSphere, ESXi virtualization, and performance optimization. Experience with various storage technologies is also highly desired. We are looking for a top performer with a proven track record of success, a high attention to detail, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate is passionate about scripting, has extensive experience with virtualization, storage, and cloud technologies, thrives in a complex, fast-paced environment, and takes strong ownership of their responsibilities.
Required Skills & Experience
10+ years of IT experience.
3-5 years of systems engineering experience in a complex environment (on-premise and cloud).
Advanced scripting skills (Python, PowerShell).
3-5 years VMware vSphere and ESXi expertise (design, configuration, monitoring, performance tuning, optimization, HA/FT/DR).
3-5 years Windows Server domain administration skills, including performance optimization and troubleshooting.
Excellent ability to communicate clearly and effectively to colleagues, outside business partners, and vendors.
Hands-on experience configuring and managing various storage solutions, including: Fibre Channel, SAN, and vSAN (TrueNAS, Nimble).
Experience with Okta (or similar identity management tool).
AWS deployment and application stack management experience including virtualization.
Microsoft Azure deployment and application stack management experience including virtualization.
Knowledge of information security best practices.
Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Datadog).
Terraform, Docker, Ansible experience.
What You Will Be Doing
Daily Responsibilities
Infrastructure Management (On-Premise): Deploy, administer, and maintain servers (AD, DNS, DHCP, File/Print, Storage - Nimble, TrueNAS, SAN, VSAN, Applications, Virtualization - VMware vSphere, ESXi, HA, DR), batch scheduling, security, patching, alerts, user administration, and backups. Specifically, this includes expert-level configuration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting of VMware vSphere environments, as well as managing and optimizing various storage solutions. Additionally, this role requires deep expertise in Windows Server domain administration, including performance optimization and troubleshooting.
Cloud Infrastructure (AWS & Azure): Deploy, maintain, and monitor application stacks in AWS and Microsoft Azure environments, including virtualization and other cloud services such as storage & networking.
Performance & Optimization: Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization. This includes proactive monitoring, alerting, and optimization of the VMware environment and storage systems, as well as Windows Server, AWS, and Azure environments, to ensure peak performance and resource utilization. The ideal candidate will constantly seek opportunities to improve the environment and proactively recommend measures to strengthen it for the future, striving to create a best-in-class infrastructure.
Automation & Scripting: Develop and implement automation for system administration tasks using Python, and PowerShell. Utilize REST APIs for application integration.
Support & Mentorship: Provide Tier III support to end users and mentor the deskside support team, provide response and resolution on tickets escalated to systems team. Participate in the on-call rotation.
Software Updates: Test and implement software updates across all business systems.
Continuous Process Improvement: Research, recommend, and implement innovative, automated solutions for system administration tasks.
Documentation: Develop and maintain technical documentation for various audiences.
Project Management: Act as project manager or provide expert consultation on complex projects.
Vendor Management: Coordinate and collaborate with IT 3rd party service providers.
