Job Title:Library Associate/Paraeducator

Reports to:Building Principal and Teacher Librarian

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The Paraeducator will:

  • support a safe, positive teaching and learning environment
  • assist in the development of students' physical and intellectual growth
  • support social, emotional and behavioral development
  • establish positive and productive relationships
  • integrate effectively the technology to support student learning
  • practice ethical and professional standards of conduct on an ongoing basis

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  2. Manages the circulation of library materials, handling returns and retrieving overdues
  3. Maintains an organized collection where materials are easily located, shelved correctly and in good condition
  4. Recommends books to order and processes new materials received
  5. Assists in weeding materials to be discarded or replaced
  6. Performs an annual inventory of the collection
  7. Supervises students in a welcoming environment
  8. Seeks to improve student literacy and lifelong learning including reading to children during their class library time
  9. Assists students in finding "good fit" books
  10. Assists students in using computers to find information with the online catalog and database resources
  11. Carries out instruction as directed by the Teacher/Librarian
  12. Assists teachers in obtaining materials for classroom use
  13. Manages library routines and special events such as bulletin boards and displays, mending damaged materials, book fairs, etc.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Teacher Librarian

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Earned high school diploma or education equivalent

Education and Licensure:

  • Para Educator Certificate or equivalent preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 0 - 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as curriculum materials, desks, chairs, and boxes. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
