Performs phlebotomy (the practice of entering a vein to draw blood) services on inpatients and outpatients, as requested by physicians, in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Completion of a phlebotomy education program or an allied health education program that includes phlebotomy education and a minimum of 50 successful unaided venipunctures.

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Qualification to perform phlebotomy by one or more of the following criteria: Certified as a phlebotomist by American Medical Technologist (AMT), National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP). Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program. Completion of a phlebotomy education program that includes 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection. Completion of an accredited allied health professional/occupation education program which includes phlebotomy training and completion of 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection. EXPERIENCE: 1. Phlebotomy experience in a hospital or clinic setting.

  1. Performs, in a timely manner, blood collection using established laboratory guidelines designed to acquire acceptable specimens used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to meet the needs of patients, as requested by the ordering provider.
  2. Follows standard operating procedures to perform basic diagnostic procedures to produce accurate results.
  3. Operates basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer system, tube transport system, timers) consistent with standard operating procedures.
  4. Restocks, as required, the work area of needed supplies to assist coworkers in the performance of their duties.
  5. Must demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the patient care requirements for all age groups as required by the laboratory standard operating procedures.
  6. Utilizes time, material, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing and arranging workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
