POSITION SUMMARY: The Medical Lab Assistant - Certified is responsible for performance of phlebotomy, laboratory clerical work, and selected laboratory procedures. Responsibilities include: order entry, patient preparation, specimen collection, and blood drawing using standardized phlebotomy procedures. Additionally the incumbent processes specimens and performs basic waived lab testing. The Medical Lab Assistant - Certified works under the general guidance, direction and supervision of the Medical Laboratory Manager and/or the Chief Medical Technologist. Daily operational guidance and direction may be received from the Lead Medical Technologist. JOB SPECIFIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School diploma or equivalent is required. Valid certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a Phlebotomy Technician, PBT(ASCP) required. Must participate in the ASCP Certificate Maintenance Program and the continuing education required to maintain certification maintenance. Minimum of two (2) years experience with phlebotomy procedures in an outpatient or inpatient healthcare setting is required. Possession of or eligibility for a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate is required. Employee must obtain certification within four (4) months of employment. Knowledge of current laboratory safety and hygiene protocols is required. Knowledge and ability to accurately perform laboratory tests is required. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn and use computer based applications such as MS Office, electronic medical record systems and laboratory related applications is required. Experience with EPIC is desirable but not required. Ability to operate a PC and other computer peripheral equipment is required.
