CITY OF LUBBOCK Water Utilities Shift Leader in Lubbock, Texas

Summary

Monitors and controls the operation of the water treatment/distribution system or the wastewater treatment plant. Provides leadership for treatment operators on an assigned shift.

Essential Functions
  • Monitor information provided by the SCADA system such as flows, pressure, and status alarms. Verify indicated problems and have them corrected. Call out appropriate maintenance personnel for urgent problems;
  • Operate water distribution system equipment via SCADA system to maintain adequate water system pressure and supply. Start and stop pumps and open and close valves to vary flows and fill and empty storage reservoirs;
  • Direct the activities of assigned shift and personnel. Maintain adequate personnel on each shift by scheduling personnel with other shift leaders;
  • Complete and maintain control logs, reports, and records;
  • Dispatch after-hour or weekend repair or service calls for several depts;
  • Promote and maintain good public relations with the public via the telephone and in person;
  • Take inventory of supplies and order additional supplies if needed;
  • Operate or direct operation of all process equipment, including belt filter presses, gravity belt thickeners, sand filter, pump stations, aeration equipment, etc.;
  • Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications

Completion of a high school diploma or GED certification with an additional three years experience in water treatment, wastewater treatment, or water distribution, including one year experience in operation of SCADA control system; or any combination of relevant experience which provides the following:

Valid Current Driver's License

Physical Exam Required Requires a clean-shaven face**(Does not apply to wastewater)

* Critical Infrastructure:This position has been determined to have close contact with, or control of Critical Infrastructure components.This position is subject to extensive background checks and random drug screening. * WaterTreatment-TCEQ Class "B" Water license preferred. A TCEQ Class "C" Water license will be considered, however a TCEQ Class "B" Water license must be obtained within 36 months for continued employment in this position;

Water Production-Class "B" water license;

Wastewater Treatment-TCEQ

CEQ Class "B" Wastewater license preferred. A TCEQ Class "C" wastewater license will be considered with two years plant experience preferred.

A TCEQ Class "B" wastewater license must be obtained within 18 months for continued employment in this position;

Pumping and Control-TCEQ Class "B" Water license preferred. A TCEQ Class "C" Water license will be considered, however a TCEQ Class "B" Water license must be obtained within 12 months for continued employment in this position;

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Industrial safety and sanitary requirements of potable water supply systems;
  • Rules and regulations of Safe Drinking Water Act.;
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and equipment.

Ability to:

  • Prepare reports and interpret written instructions;
  • Supervise and evaluate work of others;
  • Work well with others;
  • Operate a computer keyboard;
  • Perform duties in noisy working conditions;
  • Oral communication skills;
  • Properly use Self-contained breathing apparatus as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and carry up to50 pounds.
  • Place arms above, at or below shoulder height.
  • Occasionally walk and stand during the shift.
  • Frequently climb ladders, stairs and other inclined surfaces.
