What You Will Do

Reporting to the Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Industrial Safety and Hygiene (ISH) IH Team Leader, the Industrial Hygiene and Safety (IHS) Professional is responsible for developing, recommending, and implementing programs and procedures associated with the evaluation and controls of potential health hazards. The IHS Professional will provide daily industrial hygiene program support to programmatic and facility organizations to ensure the protection of workers, compliance with Laboratory ISH requirements, and support mission success. The IHS Professional will use professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways and contribute to the development of new theories and methods. The IHS Professional collaborates with the work force in developing solutions to complex IHS problems that require in-depth analysis of work activities and data. The IHS Professional promotes safety, security, and quality in all operations; exercises prudent fiscal and property management; promotes teamwork within the organization and across the Laboratory; promotes a positive work environment; and delivers exceptional customer service. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expert level knowledge and experience implementing Industrial Hygiene related risk assessments and corrective actions.

  • Demonstrate expert level experience in the identification, application and interpretation of federal codes, standards, and regulations in multiple Industrial Hygiene program areas, including ventilation, chemical safety, beryllium, exposure assessment, non-ionizing radiation, asbestos, oxygen deficiency, confined spaces, medical surveillance, hearing conservation, and other IH areas.

  • Expert level knowledge and application of techniques and procedures for industrial hygiene exposure assessment (both qualitative and quantitative), to include sampling and sampling techniques/instrumentation, sample analysis, and selection/implementation of controls.

  • Expert level skill in the preparation and communication of industrial hygiene technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Expert level knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team environment and provide excellent customer service.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's in Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety, and 12 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expert level knowledge, and demonstrated application, of DOE and regulatory requirements related to industrial hygiene in a research environment.

  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, activities, and data collection tools.

  • An advanced degree and relevant professional certification (CIH, CSP).

Note to Applicants: Occasional travel to, and work in, other government and private facilities may be required.

Work Schedule: Candidate could potentially work a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off or a standard schedule.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
