Los Alamos National Laboratory Civil Transportation Engineer in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for an exceptional Civil Transportation Engineer to join our Engineering Services - Utilities and Infrastructure (ES-UI) team. In this high-profile position you will have the opportunity to positively impact thousands of Lab employees by continuously improving the Lab's multi-mode transportation network. LANL has a footprint of over 42 square miles with an extensive road, pedestrian, and trails network to support activities at the Laboratory. As a Civil Transportation Engineer, you will be responsible for the engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, repair, and upgrades of all roads, parking lots, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, guardrails, barricades, traffic signals, signs, and pavement striping across the Laboratory.

As a Civil Transportation Engineer, you will concurrently work on multiple design teams shaping LANL's infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing Laboratory. Your teams will provide engineering consulting services typical of any or all project phases: programming, scoping, design, construction, commissioning, and operation. At the lower level, you will serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on road and traffic infrastructure projects, with job duties to include:

  • Ensure quality, safety, reliability, and compliance with applicable standards.

  • Investigate traffic conditions and safety concerns and prepare informational reports and recommendations.

  • Complete the annual condition assessment of all transportation system infrastructure.

  • Develop and manage preventative maintenance program for transportation system infrastructure.

  • Prepare estimates of material quantities and labor and equipment necessary to complete projects, work orders, and budget requests.

At the higher level you will also be expected to:

  • Provide innovative solutions and recommends improvements to LANL Engineering Standards.

  • Directly lead other team members.

This position will be filled at either the System Engineer 3 or 4 level depending on experience and skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineer 3 ($112,000 - $186,700)

Demonstrated Knowledge of:

  • Civil/transportation engineering concepts.

  • Principles and practices of engineering theory, codes, laws, rules, regulations and procedures governing design, construction and maintenance.

  • Skills in principles and techniques of AutoCad, Civil 3D, and GIS systems.

Ability to:

  • Solve problems successfully, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.

  • Interact and work effectively with all levels of management, internal and external groups, contractors and other agencies, while conveying a high level of professionalism and design expertise.

  • Articulate concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen.

  • Mentor early career engineers.

Minimum 6 Years Experience In:

  • Highway and traffic engineering, specifically as they relate to the application of the AASHTO, MUTCD, and NMDOT standards, policies, practices and principles

  • Construction materials, soils, concrete, asphalt and the associated field and laboratory testing and inspection standards.

  • Performing traffic impact studies, corridor planning studies, conceptual roadway design, roads maintenance, and traffic signal operations and maintenance.

Engineer 4 ($135,300 - $227,700)

In addition to job requirements for Civil Transportation Engineer 3, requirements include:

Minimum 12 Years Experience In:

  • Expertise in industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to your engineering discipline.

  • Engineering work planning, budgeting, and design coordination.

  • Leading a team and/or organization.

Education/Experience for Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Education/Experience for Engineer 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting the transportation operations of a medium sized municipality.

  • Working knowledge of MicroPaver, Synchro, Centrax, Vissim software.

  • Ability to promote Integrated Safety Management and Integrated Safeguards and Security Management with an emphasis on Safe Work Practices.

  • IMSA Certified- Work Zone Safety and other applicable courses.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
