Overview The Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling seeks an Academic Advisor to guide and mentor prospective and current students in our department. We hope to fill this position with someone who can be a strong, positive, and creative student advocate and also communicate well with faculty and other stakeholders. The person in this position will advise and assist students in the development of academic plans and class schedules as well as attend to student academic inquiries, assist in the resolution of individual academic problems, and engage in proactive advising programs. The individual will be trained to provide academic advising to students and deliver advising programming to assist students in meeting their academic and career goals using the Appreciative Advising framework.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advising services in person, by phone, virtually, or by email.
  • Provide accurate information related to curriculum, graduation requirements, and university policies and procedures.
  • Create semester-by-semester graduation plan in DegreeWorks and monitors students' progress toward their declared major.
  • Provide information and strategies to utilize available campus resources and services.
  • Coordinate student teaching experiences
  • Communicate regularly with school district partners to support student teaching and practicum placements
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Assist students in making responsible and informed decisions impacting academic progress.
  • Encourage and guide students as they define and develop realistic goals.
  • Assist students in understanding the purpose of higher education and the impact on life goals.
  • Discuss the benefits of building a learning community, network, and support system among peers, professors, and mentors.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other University and non-university resources.
  • Maintain records and documentation of advising interactions.
  • Assist with college and department recruitment at on- and on-campus recruitment events.
  • Coordinate student teaching placements, data collection and evaluation.
  • Manage scholarship database and applications.
  • Attend undergraduate and faculty meetings and participate in ad hoc committees.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1 year of experience in advising or a student service-related area. Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in advising, counseling, higher-education, or related field.

  • 2-3 years of experience in advising or a student service-related area.
  • Experience working with individuals in a mentoring capacity.
