Job Description:
Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. Individual may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.
- * Performs technical procedures appropriately and accurately; i.e. venipuncture or capillary collection
- * Performs specimen collection procedures as needed; i.e. urine, throat, urine drug
- * Processes specimens appropriately including proper patient identification
- * Promotes good public relations and professional attitude for laboratory department and facility
- * Assists in departmental training of new employees and students
- * Participates in maintaining efficient productive work area
- * Maintain and prepare adequate level of supplies; rotating inventory as needed
- * Performs point of care testing and reports results accurately and in timely manner
- * Rejection and recollection of specimens based on criteria as needed
- * Participates in continuing education and proficiency surveys as needed
- * Reports instrument or procedure failures to supervisor or appropriate personnel
- * Participates in required laboratory/facility meetings
- * Reviews required/mandatory laboratory/facility policies or procedures in timely manner
- * Promote the mission, vision, and values of organization
- * Clean, operate, troubleshoot and maintain laboratory equipment
- * Adheres to and monitor quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results
- * Provide technical information about test(s) to physicians, other providers and patients as required
- * Respond appropriately to collection of patient samples deemed as Routine, Timed or STAT
- * Knowledgeable of methods and procedures in regards to age specific competency guidelines
- * Maintain current knowledge and adherence of hospital/facility policy, state, federal and other regulatory requirements
- * Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly
- * Consult with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities
- * Review pending and outstanding reports on every shift and follows up to resolve outstanding specimens
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Courses in biology, chemistry and computer preferred.
- Certification in phlebotomy preferred but not required.
- Previous experience in a clinical laboratory is desirable.
