Redefine your personal best.

Do you have a passion for water and the vital part it plays to sustain life, habitats, ecology and as an essential human resource? Would you like to be part of a team that contributes to the intricate balance between a sustainable water environment and a future resilient water supply for the UK and across the globe? If so, we are interested to hear from you.

Stantec is seeking enthusiastic experienced people with 5 to 10 years of work experience to play central roles in delivering an expanding workload and reputation for providing innovative water supply solutions, as well as environmental and regulatory services for a range of public and private sector clients in the UK.

We have opportunities to join our water resources planning team at numerous locations across the UK (including Leeds, Cambridge, Birmingham, Redditch, High Wycombe and Reading - other office locations could be considered ) along with opportunities to join collaborative projects with global Stantec teams.

About this opportunity

“Stantec has ambitious growth targets in the water resources planning market, building on our position as the leading provider of professional, technical services to the UK water companies. We are seeking enthusiastic and experienced professionals to support our strategy and tackle the challenges to ensuring the nation has a resilient water supply whilst meeting the needs of the environment. Would you like to be part of this?”

It’s an exciting time to be involved with the challenges faced by water resources in the UK. With recent hot summers contributing to drought restrictions for many water companies, impacts of climate change on the water environment, developing solutions to ensure the long-term national resilience, finding new resource solutions and seeking ways to lower demand through leakage management, and smart metering are just a few of the issues faced.

Stantec’s engagement with water resources planning initiatives across the UK and Ireland has grown significantly since 2020. This has included working across several Strategic Resource Option (SRO) investigations in England and Wales, Water Resource Management Plans (WEMP), Drought Plans and WINEP investigations. This continues to be a growing focus for Stantec in 2023 and beyond, helping water companies deliver their AMP8 schemes.

Our water resources planning team works with water companies, regulators (such as the Environment Agency, Ofwat and RAPID), design engineers, contractors, planners, and other stakeholders to help achieve positive outcomes for projects.

As a member of our multidisciplinary and collaborative teams, you will be expected to provide high-quality work within agreed timescales, budget and quality frameworks and ensure technical and quality aspects are well managed, to deliver innovative solutions whilst ensuring client satisfaction. You will support engagement with clients as well as build and maintain effective relationships within and outside the company. Client-facing experience, as well as commercial awareness and understanding, will be an advantage. You will have a broad understanding of the water environment and will be able to support the wider water resources team when required, adding to our flexibility and maintaining consistent utilisation.

About you

We welcome people from varied backgrounds (regulatory, water company or consultancy, covering policy as well as technical areas) who have been directly applying their water resources knowledge through working in multidisciplinary teams, liaising with clients, statutory authorities, and other stakeholders. Ideally with involvement of the development of water company drought plans and/or water resource management plans.

We are seeking someone with experience in water resources planning which you may have gained through applied projects with components of the supply-demand balance such as abstraction impact assessments, hydrological, hydrogeological and/or water resources assessment, drought trigger development, demand forecasting, options appraisal, investment modelling or development of risk and uncertainty.

Navigating the complexities of water management in the UK requires a deep understanding of the regulatory landscape and best practices. We're seeking someone with a firm grasp of water resource management and drought planning regulations and processes, ideally gained through experience in investigations under WINEP, Environmental Destination assessments, Water Framework Directive evaluations, and wider catchment management initiatives. The ability to assess climate change impacts and appraise different options for managing water resources is also essential.

This role is a perfect fit for someone with 5-10 years of relevant experience, ideally holding a degree in geography, geological sciences, environmental science, civil or environmental engineering. A postgraduate degree in hydrology, hydrogeology, or water resources management is a strong advantage, but not mandatory. We value active involvement in professional institutions like CIWEM or the Institute of Water, and encourage your pursuit of professional chartership.

But don't be shy if your background doesn't tick every box! Our team thrives on diverse perspectives and skillsets. If you're passionate about water resource management and possess relevant expertise, we'd love to hear from you. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to real-world challenges and make a difference in a fast-paced and rewarding environment.
