NJ Employer Farworker and Laborers, Crop, Nursery and Greenhouse in King Ferry, New York

Anticipated period of employment: 7/18/2024 to 10/25/2024

Vegetables including, but not limited to, green beans, brussels sprouts, cabbage, sweet corn, pumpkins, squash.. Plant, cultivate and harvest vegetables. Use hand tools including, but not limited to: shovels, hoes, tampers, machetes, and knives. Plant roots, and seeds. Till soil. Weed and thin plants. Transplant plants by hand. Pick, cut, lift, or pull crops to harvest them. Tie vegetables in bunches. Select harvestable produce based on correct size, maturity, and quality. Grade, size and field pack product. Take care to prevent damaging produce and plants. Will not leave any appropriate product on plant during harvest. Mow, cut, and weed fields. Perform ditching, shoveling, hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, and other manual tasks. Bending, stooping and kneeling required. Lift, carry, and load/unload products or supplies. Use power equipment including but not limited to: tractors, planters, mowers, plows, sprayers, cultivators, power shears, chain saws, high lifts, fork lifts, skid loaders. Must operate agricultural equipment safely, with or without direction. Set up, maintain, and operate irrigation equipment used in agricultural production, including regulating indoor and outdoor irrigation systems. Irrigate soil, using portable pipes or ditch systems, and maintain ditches or pipes and pumps. Dig and maintain ditches. Clear debris from field and clean/maintain farm buildings, structures, equipment, and work areas. Assist with farm building/field maintenance and repairs. Repair fences. Work on production line. Grade, size, sort, wash, and pack product. Bunch/bundle product pursuant to supervisor instructions.

Corn harvesting will be performed by hand with a moving tractor system in crews of approximately 16 pullers. Workers will pull sweet corn off the stalk and toss ears into wagons. Workers will walk behind, in front of, ride or drive tractor and wagon system. Assemble boxes/ crates. Packers will pick corn out of wagon and place 48 ears into pre-made crates. Packed crates are then moved to workers who will fold and close the lid of the crate and push them down the conveyor belt system. Loaders will then lift and stack the full crates of corn on a truck. Count and check crates as they are loaded onto truck. Maintain daily log of hours and number of harvested boxes. Sweet corn must be harvested by pulling down while bending and reaching to select mature plants. Workers must carefully select ears of corn of the correct size, maturity, and quality. Workers will not harvest ears of corn with discolored husks, unacceptable shanks (longer than 6 inches), or visible worm damage. Corn is harvested in the early morning hours starting before daylight while temperatures are cooler to assure sugar content is higher to produce a better quality product.

Work is done in the field for long periods of time. Workers may assist in handling product weighing up to 70 pounds and lifting to a height of 5 feet. Workers must work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Work required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity and extreme temperatures.

Only workers meeting all qualifications on the job order should be referred by the Job Service Office.
