Job Summary

The Tribal Canoe Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the planning, management, and implementation of the Tribal Canoe Program, ensuring alignment with cultural values, safety standards, and community engagement goals. The coordinator will work closely with tribal leadership and tribal members to promote cultural preservation and foster active participation in canoe-related activities such as practices, journeys, and educational initiatives.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Program Management and Planning:

  • Plan and coordinate all aspects of the Tribal Canoe Program, including scheduling canoe practices, cultural workshops, and canoe journeys.

  • Develop an annual program calendar in collaboration with other Cultural Programs, elders, and other stakeholders.

  • Ensure all events are aligned with the tribal cultural traditions and values.

  • Manage program logistics, including transportation, permits, and accommodation for canoe journeys.

    Safety and Compliance:

  • Establish and enforce safety protocols for all canoe-related activities, ensuring the safety of all participants.

  • Organize and help conduct regular safety training, including water safety, capsizing procedures, and first aid basics.

  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and tribal policies.

  • Coordinate maintenance and safety inspections of canoes, support boats, paddles, and other equipment.

    Community Engagement and Outreach:

  • Actively promote participation in the Tribal Canoe Program by organizing outreach efforts within the tribal community, particularly focusing on youth and elder involvement.

  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages community members of all ages to engage with the program.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for tribal members, community partners, and external organizations regarding program events and activities.

  • Develop partnerships with other tribal canoe programs cultural organizations, and inter-tribal networks to promote collaboration and cultural exchange.

    Cultural Preservation and Education:

  • Work with tribal elders and cultural leaders to integrate tribal cultural teachings into the program ensuring the transmission of traditional knowledge related to canoeing, navigation, and the cultural significance of the ocean.

  • Organize and facilitate cultural workshops, language sessions, and ceremonies related to canoe practices and journeys.

  • Coordinate opportunities for youth mentorship and cultural education through participation in the canoe program.

    Administrative and Financial Management:

  • Manage the program’s budget, including tracking expenses, processing purchase orders, and ensuring adherence to financial guidelines, including BIA American Rescue Plan Act regulations (ARPA) requirements.

  • Prepare reports on program activities, participation, and financial performance for tribal leadership and funding agencies.

  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities and grants to support program growth and sustainability.

  • Maintain detailed records of all program activities, safety inspections, equipment maintenance, and participant engagement.

    Leadership and Supervision:

  • Recruit, train, and supervise program volunteers and assistant instructors.

  • Provide leadership during canoe practices and journeys, ensuring a collaborative and respectful environment.

  • Act as a role model for program participants, embodying the values of respect, cooperation, and cultural pride.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Coordinate debrief sessions after events to gather feedback and improve future program activities.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • High School Diploma/GED.

  • Two Years’ experience working with tribal communities, particularly in a cultural recreational, or educational capacity.

  • Knowledge of Alaska Native or Pacific Northwest tribal cultures, with an understanding of the cultural significance of canoes.

  • One year of previous experience in program management, particularly in organizing large events or outdoor activities with knowledge of maritime safety standards.

  • Proof of valid driver's license with acceptable driving record (when DL is required for the job).

Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in cultural studies, education, recreation management, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.

  • Knowledge of basic first aid, CPR, and water safety protocols.

  • Knowledge of grant writing and fundraising strategies.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.

· Strong leadership and communication skills.

· Ability to work collaboratively with community members, elders, and external partners

· Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and budget management tools.

The employee must be physically able to participate in water-based activities including paddling. Will work outdoors and on the water, often in varying weather conditions. The employee is frequently required to stand and/or sit, climb, or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds lift and/or and occasionally move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The noise level in the work environment is usually average. Willingness to travel and participate in extended canoe journeys.

Conditions of Hire

· May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.
