Summary

Responsible to work independently, perform the daily activities required to successfully complete design related tasks for stations, bridges, retaining walls and any other areas applicable to civil engineering disciplines under the jurisdiction of the Managing Engineer of Design. Practice the profession with the paramount concern of safeguarding the life, health, property, and public welfare.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform design activities and complete project documents. Develop general project description and draft design criteria of various design concepts for selection by upper management. Develop general scope of work, detailed project drawings, specifications and other design documents as required for construction projects. Perform critical User review of designs prepared by third party consultants focusing on ability to maintain, durability, impact to operations, and construability.

  • Ensure project documents are being prepared in compliance with project schedule. Coordinate office staff as required to ensure accurate and timely completion of project drawings. Coordinate with LIRR Force Account (Buildings & Bridges) to ensure construction problems are resolved in a timely and accurate manner. Review shop drawings submittals and perform periodic field visits to ensure work is being performed in accordance with design documents. Develop project management skills by taking a pro-active approach to work and by striving for results.

  • Actively participate in overtime assignments as required by the department (i.e. 204 duty, Bridge hits, etc.) Take a lead role in ensuring project work and other tasks are complete as per senior management direction and project schedule.

  • Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to guidelines of company safety policies and procedures. Lead by example.

  • Select develop and motivate personnel within the department. Provide career development for subordinates. Provide prompt and effective coaching and counseling. Promote safe work practices and provide safe working conditions. Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables all employees to develop and contribute to their full potential. Perform other assignments as requested by Senior Management.

  • Ensure project documents are prepared and issued in accordance with LIRR ISO 9001 standards. Prepare project drawings in CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) and coordinate with others in CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) preparation of drawings.

    A) Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Architecture, or Construction or related field.

  • Must possess recent practical and professional experience (a minimum of 3 years) in positions with increased responsibility with engineering consultants and /or State/City Agencies.

  • Must possess recent progressively responsible experience in design and construction projects in the Railroad Industry or equivalent.

  • Must possess a strong background in Civil Engineering with in-depth knowledge of engineering principles and practices.

  • Must possess strong communication, organizational and writing skills.

  • Must demonstrate continuous professional development.

  • Must possess a F.E./E.I.T. (Fundamentals of Engineering/Engineer in Training) certification or substantial graduate and continuing education beyond the Bachelor in Science Degree.

    B) Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Transportation or Business.

  • Progressive experience within the LIRR Engineering Department.

  • NY State P.E. License.

Other Information

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.
