Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking a Senior Biologist to join our Environmental Services team. The Environmental Scientist will be responsible for tracking and carrying out gopher tortoise, bat, and threatened and endangered species surveys, preparation of GIS based maps, figures, and GPS for field applications, the preparation of biological impact assessments, NEPA documents, and permit applications for a variety of projects within the power, oil and gas, land management and real estate, mining, and transportation sectors. Project work will include activities throughout the southeastern U.S.
Our staff include specialists in wetland science, threatened and endangered species surveys, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), cultural resources, hydrogeology, engineering, habitat and ecosystem restoration, environmental remediation, and GIS. We help our clients identify constraints and respond to opportunities within the changing regulatory and corporate environment through active engagement with the public, stakeholder groups, and government regulators. Our team members are involved in a variety of projects that may include Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) delineations and permitting, endangered species habitat assessments and surveys, NEPA, siting and routing studies, stream assessments and sampling, habitat restoration, siting and zoning applications, and complex planning and permitting for a variety of industries including renewable energy, transportation, power, government, and development.

Additional Responsibilities
Wildlife surveys and habitat assessments
Bat mist-net surveys, Bat acoustic surveys, Acoustic data analysis and Wildlife radio-tracking
Environmental permit applications
Endangered resource record reviews
GPS data collection and mapping support
ArcGIS online mapping and data collection applications
Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data; and
Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review
Synthesize data from multiple sources, use professional judgement in providing recommendations and conclusions supported by data
Technical report and memorandum writing
Permit application preparation
Planning and leading benthic/marine resource surveys and preparing benthic/marine resource survey reports
Conducting wildlife surveys and preparing wildlife survey reports
Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective, safe, and efficient manner
Maintain Stantec’s high standard of quality control and quality assurance
Identify and resolve problems in creative ways
Effective communication with colleagues, clients, and agency personnel
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Demonstrated academic and professional experience with wildlife identification and be familiar with state and federal listed species programs
Attention to detail and strong organizational and task scheduling skills
Strong communication skills, both verbal and technical writing
Must be disciplined and motivated in producing high-quality deliverables
An affinity for working in a multidisciplinary team of engineers, planners, scientists, and subject matter experts with the ability to work independently, dependably, and efficiently
Must be able to effectively interact directly with clients in a professional manner
Ability to work in harsh and demanding field environments
May require working long field days outdoors, sometimes under rigorous conditions (e.g., hot and/or rainy weather, remote areas, under water, in a wide variety of habitats).
A valid driver’s license and ability to drive corporate vehicles including a full size pickup truck safely

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or Management, Biology, Ecology, Botany, or a closely related field
5 years experience as an Environmental Scientist, Biologist or other related position in a consulting environment
Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
Experience with gopher tortoises and FWC permits for survey and relocation; ArcGIS experience
Experience conducting surveys for threatened and endangered species
Knowledge of local, state, and federal permitting regulations
Hold, or currently on a federal recovery permit that can be transferable allowing capture of eastern bat species (Indiana, northern, and gray bats) required. Virginia big-eared bat, a plus.
Experience setting acoustic detectors for survey and data download, organization, and analysis using automated software programs. Manual vetting experience a plus.
The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration to their own and the team's safety is important.
