As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

Internship provides an opportunity to gain valuable work experience related to your field of study. You will be engaged in paid, full-time work that allows you to apply classroom theories to space-flight missions. Your experience will also help you determine whether a career with the Space Program is right for you. If that is the case, your new skills and knowledge will help you begin your career at a higher level of responsibility and productivity.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Provide electrical engineering support for developing, designing, and testing of Thrust Vector Control electromechanical actuators and associated avionics specific to the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) and development of an active inertial load simulation capability. Duties will cover data inputs specific to the spacecraft vector control system.

  • Develop original programming functions and routines within the MATLAB, LabView, Python, and/or Excel programming environments, including code documentation, intended for a hardware-in-the-loop test application.

  • Assist resolving issues with existing vendor developed code and routines.

  • Utilize existing vendor developed code and routines in original computing solutions.

  • Develop graphical user interfaces.

  • Assist laboratory development testing, including data acquisition and analysis.

  • Collaborate with other engineers to resolve technical issues.

  • Document and deliver results with recommendations.

Expectations included in the ASED Internship:

  • You are expected to have a valid driver’s license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations.

  • NOTICE: As of May 7, your state-issued drivers’ license must be a Star License, since NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center is located on the Army’s Redstone Arsenal, a Federal installation.

  • You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.

  • We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.

Basic Qualifications

Educational requirement is enrollment in a university or college program leading to a BS degree in Electrical, Aerospace, or related engineering field. Degree program from an ABET accredited university preferred.

Must be able to provide own transportation

Requirements:

  • Strong MatLab Programming skills.

  • Knowledge in Python, C++, C#, LabView, Excel VBA, or similar is desired.

  • Exposure to CODESYS or similar PLC is desired.

  • Hardware-in-the-loop or Software-in-the-loop test experience desired.

  • Proficient using Microsoft Office Products (especially Excel and PowerPoint).

  • Good communication and documentation skills.

  • Good organizational skills and time management.

  • Able to work in a team environment.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
