Position Overview:

We are currently recruiting for a Mass Spec Operator to join the Bioanalysis department on a full-time basis.

The Mass Spec Operator will operate the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) systems and provide a trouble-shooting resource for problematic LC-MS methods. To assist, where required, in the development and implementation of LC-MS methods within the department working generally with minimal supervision.

MS Operators work closely with Scientists (Technical Managers/Technical Specialists) to ensure studies are performed according to scientific and technical standards and in a timely and cost effective manner.

The MS Operator team work shift patterns on rotating weekly basis as follows:

  • 6am-2:15pm

  • 8:45-5pm

  • 11:45am-8pm

  • 2pm-10pm

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge and commitment to health and safety procedures and practice, particularly the use of personal protection equipment and COSHH initiatives.

  • Individual has a responsibility to conduct all work in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of current GLP and GCP regulations as applicable.

  • Ensure that all study-based activities are performed in accordance with the study protocol and Covance standard operating procedures (SOP) to the required scientific and regulatory standards.

  • Demonstrate a knowledge and use of data systems - Nautilus, Analyst, Watson, eWorkBook etc.

  • Demonstrate good communication skills and effective liaison with Laboratory Supervisors, Study Directors, Study Coordinators and other members of staff within the department and from other departments.

  • The role involves alternating shift work

Specific Tasks

  • Set-up and operation of LC-MS/MS instrumentation.

  • The running of batches of samples on the LC-MS/MS systems as scheduled. This will include the verification of system suitability before analysis is commenced, as well as any appropriate post-analysis activities.

  • To help provide cover for operation of LC-MS/MS equipment outside of usual core hours, as required.

  • To undertake the development and implementation of new LC-MS/MS methods, as required, under the direction of the Method Development Manager/ Method Development Specialist.

  • To complete in a timely fashion all required documentation (e.g. maintenance, metrology).

  • To ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of the MS laboratory at all times.

  • To develop knowledge in all aspects of bioanalysis in general and LC-MS/MS in particular and to remain abreast of new skills, techniques, and regulatory requirements.

  • To maintain the instrument daily batch analysis schedule.

  • To liaise with external instrument maintenance/repair personnel, including preventative maintenance schedules.

Key Qualifications:

  • Previous practical laboratory experience - minimum of 1 year in the operation of LC-MS/MS instruments. A good working knowledge of the conduct of bioanalytical studies is also required.

  • Good communication skills and an understanding of Health & Safety policies, Company Policies and Procedures and Good Laboratory Practice.

  • Computing skills, word processing and use of spreadsheets required.

  • Appropriate academic qualifications: e.g. a degree in chemistry or a related subject.
