CRAWFORD COUNTY AGR EXTENSION DIST Extension Educator in Harlan, Iowa

Objective

The Extension Educator conducts research-based educational programming to improve quality of life in Crawford County, Iowa. This position works as a team member with staff and council members to develop and implement the Crawford County program plan in concert with Iowa State University Extension and Outreachs Mission.

Responsibilities

50% - Carry out CYFAR Grant responsibilities over a five-year period.

  • Develop relationships with Latino families, school staff and other organizations that serve Latino families in the community.
    • Provide overall leadership for planning and implementation of the Salir Adelante kick-off event annually and the family workshop series.
    • Partner with school staff and other organizations to identify and recruit youth and their families who meet the selection criteria for program participation.
  • Connect participating youth to the 4-H Career Pathways Academy and other 4-H leadership and life skill programs (e.g., 4-H Connect, Iowa 4-H Youth conference, Ricochet) and assist with implementation as available and needed.
  • Coordinate family nights/events for participating families 3-4 times throughout the year.
  • Annually (or twice a year if feasible) coordinate and travel with participating youth and their parents/families to visits to institutes of postsecondary education (e.g., ISU Family Visit Day; visits to local/area trade schools, community colleges)
    • Identify, recruit, and assist in training community volunteers to carry out some project components (e.g., facilitators for the Salir Adelante workshop series; 4-H leaders; volunteers to help plan and carry out family nights/events)
    • Assist with managing project budget and expenses.
    • Work with extension staff and volunteers to engage participating youth in existing 4-H and youth development programs and assist with program implementation as available and needed.
    • Use technology to help youth and parents engage and progress toward goals.
    • Maintain regular contact with parents/caregivers and encourage their involvement in their youths learning.
    • Prepare and present reports of CYFAR project related activities and outcomes to the Crawford County Extension Council
    • Assist with the CYFAR project community advisory committee (CAC)

50% - General Human Sciences Education

  • Conduct research-based educational programming in the Human Sciences/Families program area.
  • Ability to proactively adapt to changing education programming demands to meet the emerging client and organizational needs in any Extension program areas and signature programs.
  • Work independently and with others to secure resources (volunteers, contracts, grants, and donations) to support identified needs at county level.
  • Manages resources to ensure the effective delivery of education programs.
  • Respond to client requests for technical assistance.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the Regional Director, Program Specialists, and county Extension staff.
  • Actively search out needs in the county, informing the Council, Regional Director, Program Specialists, and county Extension staff of those opportunities, and then developing and carrying out appropriate responses to meet needs.
  • Through public relations activities and networking, be locally recognized as an Extension professional.
  • Inform Extension Council of activities, programming, and issues on a periodic basis.
  • Report and evaluate the impact of programs.

Qualifications

  • 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Evidence of volunteer management
  • Good written, oral and customer relations communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, MS Excel, Internet, and E-mail applications
  • Access to reliable transportation, valid driver license and access to a motor vehicle are required.
  • Be approved throug the Child Protection and Safety Program/background screening.
  • Ability to work flexible hours. The successful candidate will be expected to successfully manage their schedule including some evening and weekend meetings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in public or human relations field
  • Bi-lingual Spanish and English speaker
  • Bachelors degree in education, family and consumer science, community development, human resources, social work, or related field to Extension subject matter.
  • Previous Extension experience
  • Experience in developing social marketing delivery channels.
  • Coursework in education with experience in formal and/or non-formal teaching
