This position is for an Engineering Supervisor I that will serve as the Division 7 Bridge Maintenance Engineer and be responsible for planning, directing, assisting, and coordinating Bridge Maintenance Crews in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of bridges, pipe exceeding 48 inches in diameter and box culverts within the 5 counties of the Division. Employee duties will consist of developing a bridge maintenance preservation program for the division and successful delivery of the Division’s work program and plan. This position will determine the correct maintenance repairs and needs for the Division in addition to ensuring critical finds are addressed correctly and in an appropriate time period. Complete all scheduled and emergency work within budget constraints; establish and direct bridge maintenance force account program for the Division. Other duties include supervising multiple bridge maintenance offices to assure proper handling of hazardous waste materials and proper accounting of bridge and office records and conducting monthly safety meetings. Respond to inquiries from the media, general public, DOT officials and other governmental agencies regarding bridge projects. This position will also be responsible for the Storm Water Pollution Plan for Bridge Maintenance. The selected applicant will establish and direct bridge maintenance force account program for the division. Employee will make cost estimates to budget bridge maintenance funds and aid division in budgeting funds and manage inventory and requisition of materials and supplies. Duties also include determining and recommending equipment and personnel complements for each crew. This position will perform calculations to check construction framing plans, temporary supports, beam capacities and hydraulic adequacy of existing and proposed pipes; and review finished work orders, monthly charges, encroachments, bridge damage claims, requisitions, bridge data and expense vouchers. Additional duties include supervising multiple bridge maintenance offices to ensure proper handling of hazardous waste materials and proper accounting of bridge and office records and conducting monthly safety meetings to review personal injuries and equipment accidents. Position will counsel subordinates relative to work habits, quality/quantity of work and use of equipment. Initiates written warnings, document actions and recommends further disciplinary measures if necessary.

  • Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various transportation accounting systems

  • Experience in the supervision and evaluation of personnel, to include hiring and disciplinary actions

  • Customer service experience with the general public, local government officials, fellow employees, etc.

  • Experience in conducting meetings with employees, citizens and public officials in order to conduct investigations and resolve various issues

    Additional Expectations:

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are needed for this

position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
