Public Works Wastewater Operator I Under the Direction of: Public Works Director or designee. Pay Range: $20.00 to $23.00 per hour
Job Summary:
The Wastewater Operator I is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the city's wastewater system and storm drains. This position involves performing tasks related to the upkeep and repair of sewer infrastructure, including pipelines, pumps, manholes, and lift stations; operates heavy equipment and maintains various type of maintenance equipment and tools. In this position, employee works closely with other team members to ensure the efficient and safe functioning of the wastewater system.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance and Repair: Assist in the maintenance, cleaning, and repair of sewer systems, including pipelines, manholes, lift stations, and storm drains.
- Inspection and Monitoring: Conduct routine inspections of the wastewater collection system to identify potential issues such as blockages or leaks. Occasionally performs utility locates and all necessary tasks associated with utility locates.
- Emergency Response: Respond to sewer system emergencies, such as overflows or blockages, and assist in quick resolution to minimize disruption.
- Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain equipment used in sewer system maintenance, including jet vac trucks, backhoes, and CCTV cameras.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance work, and repairs using iWorq.
- Sampling: Collect wastewater samples as required by the State of Utah and help maintain records.
- Safety: Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment and prevent accidents or injuries.
- Other Duties: Attend and participates in meetings and training courses. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Experience: Previous experience in sewer system operations is preferred but not required; on-the-job training will be provided.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
- A Class B Commercial Driver's License is required within six (6) months of employment.
- Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification (or the ability to obtain one as required by the state).
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Must be at least 18 years old to apply.
Core Competencies:
- Basic knowledge of sewer system maintenance and equipment operation.
- Effective verbal communication skills are required; must be able to maintain positive working relationships with City departments and personnel, outside agencies, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and in varying weather conditions.
- Self-starter with the ability to follow instructions.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and occasional sitting, kneeling, crouching, and climbing.
- Exposure to variable weather conditions, vehicle traffic, heavy equipment, confined spaces, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases.
Work Schedule:
- Full-time position with potential for overtime.
- On-call availability is required.
7:00 am to 3:3 0 pm, Monday through Friday.
