We currently have a full-time opportunity with our Safety Team. We are seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented, self-directed professional to provide safety support within our Grande Prairie Wood Products organization. This position reports directly to the Unit Manager and supports the Grande Prairie Lumber Mill. The Health & Safety Professional will assist the Health & Safety Manager in establishing reliable methods for improving safety performance and nurturing a culture in which safety is an overriding value in all activities.

As a Health & Safety Professional your accountabilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in implementing and monitoring Weyerhaeuser’s health and safety programs.
  • Ensure systems are in place for an effective safety program while maintaining compliance with regulatory/corporate guidelines, applicable record keeping, reporting, safety statistics and trend analysis.
  • Support the Safety Manager and team leaders in implementation and execution of the Health & Safety Management system.
  • Assist with industrial hygiene monitoring to ensure workplace exposures remain under Provincial and Weyerhaeuser exposure limits.
  • Organize and participate in safety audits and inspections as needed.
  • Assists with the organization and scheduling of new hire training.
  • Provides visitor and contractor orientations.
  • Responsible for Environmental Reporting and Training
  • Assist with Paired Safety Observation (PSO) program execution and works with team leaders to complete the PSOs.
  • Assist with incident investigations to determine contributing factors, root cause and to establish preventative measures/corrective actions where necessary.
  • Continuously analyze and provide recommendations for improvements, with regards to tracking and reporting procedures for safety data.
  • Develops and distributes communication to the site regarding Health & Wellness and safety alerts.
  • Maintain detailed records through online documentation, electronic databases and SharePoint files. Track and evaluate work related injuries and illness ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintain supply inventories and personnel protection equipment.
  • Lead the “Joint Health & Safety Committee” and its functions into a workable and functioning part of the safety culture to add value. Encourage employee involvement in safety and promote a caring safety culture.
  • Schedules, develops, and conducts monthly safety training for all associates on a variety of topics.
  • Assists in emergency response and evacuation plans and ensure emergency preparedness measures are implemented and reviewed.
  • Coaches and works with mill leadership to be a visible role model of incident prevention and safe work practices.
  • Provides on-the-floor safety coaching and recognition.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated the following:

  • BA/BS in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene or related discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Graduate Safety Professional (GSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), CRSP or CRST certification or equivalent certifications strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • A minimum of one year of experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or other heavy industrial environment strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with all business groups to accomplish group objectives.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and proficiency in MS Office and knowledge of health & safety software programs.
  • Self-directed with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and achieve goals in a timely manner.
  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability and willingness to support a multi-shift manufacturing organization.
  • Willingness and ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.

  • Willingness to work extended hours should situation warrant.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening and communication skills (verbal & written).

Compensation: This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $76,800 - $109,800 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 7% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Retirement: Nonunion Canadian employees are automatically enrolled in our Defined Contribution Pension Plan, which includes a paid company match up to 6%, in addition to a company contribution equaling up to 7.25% of your base salary. Employees are also eligible to enroll in the Retirement Savings Plan (Group RRSP).
