POSITION SUMMARY: The Technician provides support to execute objectives related to trail and open space management as well as Department wide plans that support the City of Glenwood Springs strategic vision.
Perform entry level work in the stewardship of open spaces, trails, gardens, and associated public amenities. Daily duties will focus on the maintenance and improvement of City assets. Receives instruction and technical advice from the Trails and Open Space Supervisor. Individuals are expected to work in a safe and efficient manner. This position may require hiking or biking up to 4+ hours per day, carrying a backpack and hand tools, and working outside in inclement weather and in mountainous terrain.

HOURS: Seasonal FTE from May 1-October 31
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Maintenance and construction of natural surface and hardened trails as well as associated amenities using hand tools and mechanized equipment. Skills related to current proficiency with safe and efficient operation of equipment and machinery used to maintain public trails including but not limited to City vehicles, ATV's, trucks with trailers, skid steers, chainsaws, woodchippers, and other implements, utilizing City provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or willing to learn and become proficient. Vegetation management and control of noxious weeds, including general care of trees, shrubs, grasses, forbs as well as implementation of manual, chemical and biological weed control methods. Understanding of ecological restoration and erosion control, including project planning, site preparation, fencing, seeding, planting, and aftercare. Perform trashcan emptying, dog station maintenance, litter cleanup, graffiti removal, and other related duties as assigned. Communicate and update co-workers and management of work progress and issues arising. Report progress on daily or weekly work orders in City's asset management system, VueWorks. Snow removal when necessary. Occasionally working after regularly scheduled hours to work alongside and lead volunteers through restoration or trail building projects. Comfortable with working alone in backcountry situations.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS Necessary: Must be 18 years old or older High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle record. Experience in outdoor settings.
Desired: Bachelor's degree, or course work leading to a degree, in Natural Resources Management or equivalent. Willingness to undertake State of Colorado pesticide applicator Certified Operator training. Willingness to undertake S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaw training. Willingness to undergo Crew Leader Training through Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers (RFOV) to learn basic trail maintenance standards and leadership skills when working with volunteers.
