GLENWOOD COMMUNITY SCHOOLS CLASSIFIED STAFF JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Paraeducator--Level 2/3

Qualifications: · Prefer previous experience working with children who have special needs

· High school diploma or equivalent

Essential Function: Depends on specific position

Reports To: Principal, special education teacher, general education teacher, and support staff

Consults With: Special education teacher, and general education teacher

Position Goal: To assist the teacher in maintaining developmentally appropriate classroom activities and learning environment so that children with special needs may learn effectively and reach their maximum potential.

Performance Responsibilities:

· Attendance is necessary to be successful in this position.

· Demonstrates respect for the dignity of the sensitivity to the needs of students with

disabilities.

· Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school

community.

· Attends training/inservice opportunities as required.

· Keeps information related to individual children and families confidential.

· Check e-mail daily. E-mail teacher progress reports three times per week, for those

students you assist in general education classes.

· Performs errands and tasks for students, only if they cannot do it themselves.

· Under supervision of the special education teacher, works with individuals or small groups to work on lessons initially introduced by the special education teacher.

· Accompanies the student(s) as needed when trips to the office or to the school

nurse

are necessary.

· Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the

student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.

· Serves as a resource person, if and when requested, to the child’s staffing team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.

· Ability to regularly lift 40 pounds and push/pull up to 100 pounds.

· Assists the student(s) to whom assigned in such physical tasks as putting on and

taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, and using the lavatory.

· Assists with loading and unloading of buses.

· Lifts or assists with lifting students from wheelchairs to changing table, beds, or

other designated areas.

· Collects and records data according to established criteria determined by the

classroom teacher.

· Accompanies students individually or in-groups on mobility functions to reinforce life

and work skills.

· Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,

materials and facilities.

· Sanitizes classrooms and equipment using approved materials and methods.

· Provides personal hygiene activities with students, including appropriate response to

various body fluids.

· Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and follows through on prescribed

behavioral management programs.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment: Days students are in school. Wage schedules shall be subject to annual review and modification by the Glenwood Board of Education or through the collective bargaining process, where one exists. Starting wage is $14.25/hr.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Classified Staff Evaluation.
