POSITION SUMMARY:

The Surgical Technologist participates as a team member in the planning and implementation of nursing care for each patient. She/He will demonstrate an ability to work with the medical, nursing, and ancillary services to provide safe patient care. The Scrub Tech demonstrates a professional, courteous manner, and handles confidential information with discretion for the patient and their family.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates the ability to clean instruments and ensure sterility is achieved by utilizing the appropriate procedures. Recognizes successful completion of steam autoclave and automated high level disinfectant units.

  • Selects equipment and supplies in an organized manner, based on Surgical Procedure. Demonstrates competence in preparing instrument sets according to preference lists, patient history, and age. Utilizes supplies cost-effectively. Demonstrates ability to handle and operate sophisticated equipment. Detects and readily adapts to changes in surgical procedures.

  • Creates and Maintains Sterile Field. Maintains aseptic technique at all times in accordance with AORN Standards. Demonstrates ability to open and handle sterile supplies, proper surgical hand scrubbing, donning sterile gown and gloves, setting up sterile field, receiving sterile supplies from the circulator, and assisting in proper draping of the patient. Initiates corrective measures when break in sterile technique occurs.

  • Demonstrates ability to work with the medical and nursing staff in providing safe patient care. Uses care with sharps to prevent injury or contamination. Follows policies and procedures for counts and maintains adequate count of all countable items on the sterile field. Initiates proper protocol when counts are incorrect. Accurately draws up medication with proper labeling of all solutions and syringes. Serves as a preceptor and mentor to new employees.

  • Assesses surgical environment for safety, cleanliness, and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards. Supports a state of continual service readiness. Ensures a clean, safe, and orderly work and care environment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION:

    Minimum:

    Completion of Surgical Tech Program or Evidence of NYS Dept of Health Exemption (1 year cumulative experience between January 1, 2011-January 1, 2015) or Active NYS LPN license.

    Preferred:

    Completion of Surgical Tech Program

    LICENSE:

    PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS:

    Minimum:

    BLS required through the RQI system during clinical orientation.

    Certification as Surgical Technologist (required for Surgical Tech Program Graduates without the Evidence of Exemption) or Current NYS Licensed Practical Nurse

    WORK EXPERIENCE:

    Minimum:

    One year of experience in the healthcare field, or completion of scrub tech training program with a evidence of application for Surgical Tech Certification.

    Preferred:

    Scrub tech experience.

    SKILLS:

    Minimum:

    Demonstrates ability to provide quality patient care.

    Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion and ability to deal with the people in a professional and courteous manner.

    Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple priorities and enhance the spirit of teamwork through effective role modeling.

    Excellent interpersonal, communication and organization skills.
