Newaygo County Regional Educational Services Agency Teacher Consultant for the Visually Impaired in Fremont, Michigan
General Function
The Visually Impaired Teacher Consultant shall be responsible to provide direct and/or consultative special education services to students specific to vision loss.
Qualifications
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate and/or State of Michigan approval to function in the specific discipline area.
- Physically capable of performing the necessary job duties.
Proficient in braille, low vision devices, and assistive technology for the blind and visually impaired.

- Positive leadership skills.
Must complete and pass required criminal history check.
Essential Duties
Essential duties shall include, but are not limited to:
- Assess students' educational needs.
- Plan, implement and monitor classroom accommodations for students with a visual impairment, including support for classroom teachers, support staff and parents.
- Advise the educational team about ways to enhance each student's learning by adapting activities and materials to each student's abilities.
- Read and interpret medical eye reports as part of determining eligibility and the impact of each student's visual impairment.
- Conduct functional vision/learning media assessments and cortical visual impairment assessments to determine initial and ongoing eligibility, appropriate goals and objectives, and level of support needed.
- Obtain specialized materials, including procuring materials from the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), providing braille, digital, or enlarged print books, and other needed materials.
- Assist general and special education personnel with the special education planning process as needed, including data collection and recording, special education evaluations, and IEP meetings.
- Complete and present a written evaluation report to parents/guardians and local educational agencies within a required timeline.
- Assist in the development of goals and objectives and maintain a record of student progress.
- Keep apprised of new materials and methods of instruction and provide academic support and modification of instructional materials for classroom teachers and students.
- Consult with other personnel including teachers, principals, other ancillary staff, and parents to evaluate program effectiveness.
- Initiate and maintain regular contact with parents regarding student progress, program activities and available community resources.
- Complete timely submission of claims to Medicaid for eligible students on caseload.
Establish and maintain appropriate records, reports, forms, and procedures.
