About the Position
Northern Arizona University\'s School of Communication is conducting a search for a strong teacher-filmmaker to be hired as an Assistant Professor of Practice in our Creative Media & Film (CMF) program. This is a 9 month (August -May) teaching-focused, non-tenure eligible position. The position will begin in August 2025.
This position is primarily responsible for teaching film production courses in the major from introductory to advanced, as wll as occasional media and cinema studies courses, as needed. At NAU, teaching and mentoring students is a core value: we place student success at the center of our academic and service planning, policies, and programs. Therefore, a desire and passion for teaching and mentoring is a key component of this position.
What makes NAU unique, as compared to other comparable institutions, involves students making film projects starting their first year and our focus on storytelling within an independent filmmaking context. We also hold an annual curated student film festival at a downtown public venue. In addition, UTV Studios is an official university club where students gain direct experience in working on film projects, advised closely by a faculty member.
Courses that need coverage may include:
- Introduction to Filmmaking
- Introduction to Cinematic Storytelling,
- Various levels of Screenwriting (from short to feature length),
- Filmmaking Techniques,
- Post-production (editing, color grading and sound mixing),
- Cinematography,
- Producing Client Work,
- Directing Fiction,
- Documentary Production, and Producing, among others
There may also be opportunities to sit on Master\'s students project committees in Documentary Studies. Additional duties include service to the CMF area, the School of Communication, and the University.
Both a continued film practice at a professional level and a willingness to learn stronger teaching methods through mentorship and teaching workshops are essential for this position. Success in the position is dependent upon a demonstrated and continuing connectedness to contemporary filmmaking practices and a keen understanding of such practices (fiction narrative, documentary and potentially experimental) within the context of film history, international cinema and media studies.
Responsibilities Include:
Teaching a variety of classes focused on film production.
Collaborating with colleagues in the development of the program and planning to provide students with the best learning experience.
